Square Footage

Hi! My dh and I are looking to buy a house, but they all seem so small in our price range, which just seems so high. If you don't mind, how big is your house (square footage) and do you feel it is big enough? Did you expand and add to it? I guess it will never seem big enough, but I was just curious. TIA!

Re: Square Footage

I don't need - or want - a big house. Too much to clean, furnish, air condition....I'd rather have a lot of property.

Not sure how big my house is - but certainly big enough for the 2 of us - and 1 or 2 kids. Why can't kids share bedrooms anymore?? And who needs a seperate room just for a/v??

ETA ours is about 2,000 sq ft.

Ours is a 2000sqft ranch (not including the full basement) and it's too small (3 br/2 ba). We intend to bump out and add a full second story.

Re: Square Footage

Current house is 1800sq/ft and it started feeling squished. We just bought a new house with 3100sq/ft, though it's a ranch with only 3 bedrooms so in the future we plan on building up by adding a second story with my dream master suite Chat Icon

Re: Square Footage

Our house is about 2300 sq. feet on two floors, plus a full, partially finished, basement (not included in that figure). The total number of rooms isn't bad but I wish they were bigger. I grew up in a house that was almost 4 times that size so the rooms were large and spacious. I feel like these rooms are so full of furniture, and there is no where near enough storage or closets - no front hall coat closet!!!

Re: Square Footage

We have a 1100 sq. foot apartment. While we only plan on being here 5 years... I gotta say, it's all about layout and usable space.

Not sure if this helps you since you are looking for a house-- but the layout issue is big.

Re: Square Footage

I am in closing for a house. Asking price was 389,900. Accepted was $375000. House is definitely very small. 3 bedrooms, good size. Tiny working kitchen, liv/dining room combo, 1 1/2 bath, it is a ranch and also small laundry room in basement (not usable for anything else) I would say it is only about 1300 sq ft. Our price range was limited, especially considering the areas we were interested in. But our property for the area is one you don't see much of anymore 100 x 100. It depends on what is important to you. I like the property, it is just big enough. And property size is something you can't change. I know how you feel though about your price range and why are all the homes so small in the price range. I actually saw larger homes than the one I am buying in my price range but like I said, house I can still change, property size I can't. So I settled.

Re: Square Footage

ours is just under 3000sf living space. It was a large ranch that had a second story added about 15 years ago. Even though its large, we would like to do a major renovation in the future that would change the interior layout a bit & add more space. It is expensive to heat, but we entertain alot & we live far from people so we are set up for multiple house guests. We also have two older children.
We moved into an area that is very affordable.

Re: Square Footage

Our house is over 2300 sq ft & it is perfect for us. We have a 4 bedroom, 2.5bath splanch. The figure for the house does not include the basement (storage). All our bedrooms are big & we bought the house knowing we could have a family here & not be tight.

Re: Square Footage

Mine is pretty small, I think we figured about 1,000-1,200 square feet. We have a full basement too. THIS house is too much to clean so I can't imagine having a huge house!!

Re: Square Footage

*not in NY*

I feel our house is too big for just the two of us...it's 3,291 living space...with the garage and deck it's closer to 4000 sq ft.

My sister's new house is almost 7000 sq ft...and that's a MONSTER! Chat Icon

I think 2500sq ft is kind of perfect. Chat Icon

I believe ours is around 2000 sq. feet. We could expand but we don't plan on it. We bought our current house as our starter house and we would like to buy a bigger house in a few years on a larger piece of property.

Re: Square Footage

ours is about 2200 not including the basement and a big attic, both of which we are planning on finishing. Its pretty big for just the 2 of us, but with 2 or 3 kids, we should be pretty filled up. At first it seemed huge, but now it seems not as huge as we originally thought.

A little over 4000 square feet. Definitely big enough for us, and should be big enough for 3 kids.

Around 2400 square feet. More than enough for us. There's some rooms that we don't go in for weeksChat Icon
