Cancelling insurance policy because of a claim?

We submitted a claim for the leak we had in our house-- and here I am awaiting for the information of what the insurance company will reimburse us, and we got a letter just now saying they are canceling our policy because it was within the first 60 days of living here... What the eff??

Yes, I have heard of that before. Honestly, there have been a few things I could have put a claim in for and didn't because, it's not worth getting dropped and finding another company(likey at a higher rate)

Re: Cancelling insurance policy because of a claim?

The work to repair what we needed to is about $5000-- and this was after we already spent a significant amount for work on the house.. Isn't this what insurance is for?

I just got the letter, so we need to call on Monday. I am not sure if they are even handling the claim, or if they are just dropping us. It's ridiculous.

Insurance in Long Island and the tri-state honestly should only be used for major stuff. Like a major flood, fire, etc. Insurance companies are very quick to drop people.

I carry a $5000 deductable on my homeowners. My insurance company is quite happy with this as it will deter any small claims. They give me a significantly better rate over a $500 or so deductable. I pocket the rest into an "emergency fund" to use in case things come up.

You are probably going to have issues getting insurance from another company as they will see this claim when they run the claim search. Most likely you will just get higher rates.

They have to pay the claim since the incident occured while you were still insured.

In fact you are still insured for another 60 days as per the letter. So if your house burns down in those 60 days, they would have to pay that too.

If you just bought the house then made the claim they may be assuming that you knew the problem existed when you purchased, or should have know if your inspection was thourough, and that you're using the insurance to make repairs that should have been part of the purchase agreement. If a car had gone off the road and took out your front door they may have had a different attitude.

Re: Cancelling insurance policy because of a claim?

Insurance cos are like this. Allstate cancelled our homeowners before we even closed on our house (first one) b/c they saw the sidewalks were lifted from tree roots. Going forward, unfortunately, it's best not to make any claims unless it's big money, I mean bigger than 5000, such as tens of thousands of dollars. They really don't want to pay out, let's face the reality and can find any reason to drop someone (see above).

Happened to us when we made a claim to Allstate. We had our leak and our wood floors buckled...total claim was about 4k, they paid and then dropped us. We had a hard time getting someone else to pick us up. Ridiculous--they want your money and don't want you to make a claim!
