They're providing a pool and presumably food, soda, munchies, etc. so it's kind of irrelevant that you're not going to consume what you bring.

This wouldn't bother me at all!

IMHO, I wouldn't interpret it as you guys asking "what can we bring that WE will enjoy consuming?

IMHO, I would interpret it as you guys asking "what can WE bring to help make THEIR hosting easier? something THEY are low on or could use more of?"

This isn't about YOU and what YOU & DH drink. Its a gesture your DH extended to your hosts (as a common courtesy), and this is what THEY want you to bring.

Since you & DH don't drink, if it were us asking, we would have asked them if THEY have any preference as to brand or type.

The ONLY circumstance where I think I'd find it inappropriate or rude is if you or DH were recovering alcoholics.

ETA: Just a couple of weeks ago, DH & I were invited over to a friend's house for a BBQ dinner. I called and asked what can we bring ... answer was salads. DH doesn't eat any of that stuff. I only eat macaroni salad, and would have been perfectly happy without it. But we went out of our way to go to the place with the best salads we know to bring them potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw ... all the while knowing that DH wouldn't touch the stuff and I'd only have 1 or 2 spoons of the macaroni salad. THEY asked for salads, so we brought SALADS, happily since they were providing EVERYTHNG ELSE! I don't consider this to be much different.

Yep! I agree with all of this!

Whatever the host and hostess asked me to bring I would.

Now if it was alcohol and I had an issue with alcohol, I would decline and offer to bring something else.

Re: This might be petty- thoughts please

I don't drink either but if beer is what the host wanted me to bring I would be fine bringing that. It is a lot of work to host a party and if that is what they needed, I am happy to do bring something that helps them out. (I brought marinated chicken breasts yesterday to my MIL's house and I am a vegetarian.) JMHO

Re: This might be petty- thoughts please

I have had many instances where I have been asked to bring something that I don't eat or drink. When you ask a host what to bring you have to be prepared to get whatever they ask for. The point is to help them out with the cost of the party, not about what you want to consume. Next time I would handle it by calling them and saying we're going to bring ________. If you want to be more generous then that you could ask if there's anything in addition they need.

I agree with this as well.

Plenty of times I've brought stuff that I don't consume to parties....

Plus, you asked, they told you. Someone else said they would just bring a dessert, well, that is silly, what if they already had a table full of dessert?Chat Icon

Exactly! I did the don't worry we got it covered thing once and ended up with 14 desserts for 20 people. Now if someone asks what they can bring, I am not shy and suggest something that would be enjoyed and not go to waste. I sent as much of that stuff home as people would take because the rest of it would most likely end up in the garbage.

Re: This might be petty- thoughts please

i agree with what a bunch of people have posted previously. if you guys drink -- but just not beer -- then this would be a non-issue to me. often i bring things to people's houses that DH and i don't like bc i know the hosts do like whatevber it is. i wouldn't care if i was asked (and didn't voluntarily bring) one of these items.

if you and DH are recovering alcoholics, then i think these friends were out of line and esp when DH raised not drinking beer.

Agreed
And i don't recall seeing where the OP said they were recovering alcoholics, just that they don't drink

I think the whole point is that the hosts were asked what they needed, and they responded saying they needed beer. Its irrelevant if the OP and her DH would consume it or not. The point is to contribute to the party

Re: This might be petty- thoughts please

Def Petty, U r being invited to someones home where I am sure there will be plenty of snacks food drinks and a pool to enjoy. So what If u dont drink beer, its just what they asked u to contribute to a day which I am sure they spent plenty of $$ preparing for. Dont sweat the small stuff, just try to enjoy!
