Re: Commack SD - tell me about it

I went there.
It is very "highly rated" but is extremely competitive - and not in a good way.

its a great school but your kids will need the best clothes, best cars etc "to keep up with the jones" because that district is VERY much like that. acedmically its great though.

its on the bigger side class size wise too.

Re: Commack SD - tell me about it

i wentthere but graduated in 92. There is some of that but on the North side there are a lot of working class families. i was NOT one of the rich kids, but I was "popular" It is a very tight knit community. Most of the people I was friends with in school are still friends to this day. It is supposed to be one of the better districts in LI. Are you planning on living North or South of Commack rd. I would say the South side has more of what OP's are referring to

I grew up in Commack, great area, I went to private school so I can't say much about the public school. Many of my friends went there and all went to great colleges, never had anything bad to say. I believe its a blue ribbon school, not a 100% on that.

Was one of 2 school districts we were only looking at in Suffolk. The SD is very good, good academics and of course very good resale value of your home :)

Re: Commack SD - tell me about it

I graduated with DRMom in 92, my sisters graduated in 1991 and 2001. My mother works in the HS guidance office.

I was never one for "keeping up with the Jones" and I didn't have a designer wardrobe. I didn't even have a car until senior year, and it was my dad's toyota.

IMHO, its a great school district.

ITA!!! I am very familiar with the district and have friends whose children attend. As far as "keeping up" this pretty much goes on, to some extent, in any semi-affluent town or parts thereof.

I agree. I live in Smithtown, JUST outside of Commack. Alot of my friends grew up in Commack. I can tell you they are NOT the "keep up with the jones" type. From my commack experiences, there are definately alot of Mercedes and BMW driving families, but there are equally as many toyotas and hondas.

I would not hesitate to send my kids to the commack SD.

I lived on the North side - but once they combined the schools, North or South didn't matter. I graduated in 1996.

Also, when I was talking about being competitive, I wasn't talking about keeping up with the Joneses (I actually found that to be the worst in Middle School.) I was talking about academically competitive. I was in all AP/honors classes in HS and the competition was just ridiculous - I mean like cut throat. And it just wasn't between students, the parents were involved too.
I remember one kid's mother told him to look in all the teacher's grade books when they weren't looking so she could keep track of all the standings. It was ridiculous.

I know you mean Jericho instead of Commack rd. But don't you mean the "North side" of Jericho has more of what the OPs refer to?

I agree with the south side. I grew up on the south side - went from elementary through HS with all of the kids who grew up in Dix Hills. My family did not have a lot of money and I personally felt it to be a constant struggle - something that I would not want to send my children throught (just a personal opinion Chat Icon ) I was one of the few kids that i knew who did not go to full time camp in the summer, but with 3 kids, that wasn't happening in my family. The struggle then became what to do with yourself when no friends are around. It got worse when everyone went to sleep away.

The schools are top rated, but I feel that they REALLY push the kids to be that way (both the parents and the administration).

I also think that my educational experience wasn't that different from any of the people that I went to college with who came from surrounding towns. I don't think that it is a bad district by any means, I just don't understand all of the buzz about how great it is.

My brother is 11 years younger than me and graduated from HS in 2006. I can tell you that there were at that point (and I would think that it has only gotten worse) a LOT of drugs.

I think any district has its positive and negatives...

Nope, south side. Those that would have gone to Commack South (had they not combined the schools). The kids I went to jr high & elementary with (on the north side) were a lot more down to earth, than those that came into the HS from the south side.

Re: Commack SD - tell me about it

I'm curious as to why it seems to be okay on LIF to say that a particular school district is too snobby & not worth sending your kids to, while if someone says that they would prefer not to send their kids to a particular school district that has low test scores, a low ranking in Newsday or a high crime rate, people find that offensive and the thread becomes heated.

My issue is not with what the opinions are but with the fact that opinions about a place like Commack will just sit out there while people get up in arms if there is a negative word uttered about some other districts.

Personally, my take is that some of the top rated school districts on LI are overly concerned with test scores but I still want to send my child to a well ranked school.

I grew up on the north shore of western Suffolk. I never really felt that my school was about keeping up with the Joneses yet one of my closest HS friends feels that it was always that way.

Like I said, I don't disagree with many of the opinions. I just feel that it has become somehow okay to knock a school district that has a reputation as being wealthy or snobby when I am sure that many people who are not snobby are still quite happy in those places.

Kerie, I don't think anyone was saying Commack is not worth sending their kids too. I, along with the others were stating experiences about going there.
Based on my experience, I personally, am not sure I'd want my kids to go to Commack.
However, I do agree it is a top-rated SD with excellent academics.
The OP asked for opinions and this is what she got. My opinion really had nothing to to with economics, it was more about academic competition.

Well said Chat Icon At the end of the day it is still one of the best ranked school districts on the Island.

You'll find many snobby kids at many different districts on the island.
