Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...

My ped said if the height and weight are on the same curve(on the chart) it is fine. It is when the height and weight ratio are far apart that there is an issue.

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...

I would reduce the milk percentage but other than that I wouldn't sweat it! Once they get more active they get skinny!!!! Cailen was a fatty when he was a baby and now he really slimmed out!!!

Thats what concerned him.. she has always been in the 75% for height and the 95% for weight.... Thanks for making me feel better!

If she has always been around the same percentages, I'm not sure why your doctor is concerned at all. Her weight gain will also probably slow down once she starts walking. Personally, I would keep her on whole milk now and see what happens after she has been walking for a little while. Chat Icon

Personally, I wouldn't really worry about it. After 1, their growth really does level off b/c they become SO active

ITA. My son was bigger than that at 12 months and the dr. didn't say a thing about it.

I would question the peds suggestion that you switch your DD to 2% milk. Babies need to have diets rich in fat (healthy fats though) for myelination to occur (during myelination the axons of the neurons develop a fatty myelin sheath that allows for the elctrical impulses the be transmitted at appropropriate speeds). Myelination occurs during the 1st 2 years of life which is why children are advised to drink regular milk until age 2.

.

My DD was also about 23.5 at 1 year, always was large. My ped did NOT want us switching to 2% no way, said DD needed the fats from the whole milk, and that she would lose weight as she walked.

Well here we are at 17 mths and my DD is now only 24.5 lbs, a whole 5 mths later. I never thought she would slim down but she did and I am glad my ped steered me in the direction she did. Always told me NOT to worry about her weight. I would rethink you ped's advice, sorry and you should NOT worry!!! We have been in the same boat and she will slim down.Chat Icon

DD was almpost exactly those stats... 24lbs 10oz and 30.25 inches and my ped said she was growing wonderfully!!!!

She was always in the 90's percentile wise for height and weight.

Maybe my view is different because my DD is on the opposite end of the chart. However, I got a similar talk about adding more good fats to her diet and trying to get her to gain a little weight.

I know it is difficult to hear that what we are doing may not be perfect and we need to adjust things for our children. However I would much rather a pediatrician that advocates for my child's health, even if it is not what I want to hear.

My son was 23lbs 11oz and 31 inches at his one year appt and never did the doctor say anything like that! Chat Icon My son has always been descriebd as long and lean and even today you can see how skinny he is...and he still drinks whole milk!

I don't think that the stats show a weight a problem for your daughter...but I'm not a doctor. It's just...she's going to be walking and running all over soon and will thin out...most kids do.

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...

This is a perfect example of how Dr(s) are PEOPLE with differing OPINIONS -

I was upset at Sean's 1 Year appt. b/c he was only 20 lbs and 29 inches and I felt like everyone else's kid weighed so much more .........MY ped told me he's fine as long as he's eating, but I should give him ONLY whole milk for the fat, juice for the caloires, no water at all .......and reminded me that he had a rough few weeks during the winter of being sick, stomach virus, etc etc so he'd gain it all back ..........

I think 24 lbs for a 1 year old is pretty much the norm - My son is on the small side in his Daycare class -

Re: So upset after DDs 1 year apt...

My DD#1 was also around the same weight at that age but shorter. She has always been in the 75% for height and 90-95% for weight. Our ped is not concerned at this point and feels with the more she walks, runs and moves around in general, she will slim down. I have had a weight problem for my entire life and am petrified that DD will deal with the same. Like you, DD eats healthy food and I never give her juice- only water or milk. She does have a cookie once in a while or some cake if we are having a celebration. What percentile is your DD in for height and weight? Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: I see your DD is right about the same % as my DD. I wouldn't worry about it at all! (I know, easier said than done!) Sounds to me you are making great choices for your DD which will help her to make good eating decisions in the future. Chat Icon

DD was about that at her 1 year apt now at 2 she's between 24-26 lbs ( so no real weight gained) and my DD eats oreos drinks whole milk and eats regular yogurt.

exactly what I was told

so if she is 75% for height AND weight for example, she is fine

if she is 75% for weight and 25% for height, he may be more concerned

This I agree with.. and in hindsight, I was really upset on Saturday because of my own issues with weight.. but I am so grateful that my doctor is proactive... And if switching to 2% milk could help in the least, we are on board... the problem is that both my husband and I are a little crazy and when someone tells us to do something, we go above and beyond... for example.. DH wouldnt let her have potatoes yesterday at lunch... only protein (chicken) and veggies... So we had a chat last night... and realized that our little girl might be hungry and we cannot restrict her from everything.. just switch the milk and go from there...

Thank you for all of your support and opinions!

what she said....

and now at 18 months, he's less than 75th percentile in weight...when he was always upwards of 90th...

I think the key is moderation and healthy eating habits. I have a lot of food and body issues as well. I grew up in a very unhealthy household when it came to food and it is difficult to get past that. Sounds like you are on a great track. Chat Icon
