103 fever?

My son is 19 months and just woke up screaming about 20 minutes ago. He felt really hot so i took his temp rectally and it was 103.3. I gave him motrin, should i wait until the morning to bring him to the doctor? what should i do?

while this is REALLY scary, its very common for kids to run high fever. give him motrin, and you vcan give tylenol in a couple of hours if he needs it. you can put him in a room temp-tepid- bath. NOT cold. call ped in the am. both my kids run high fevers, i know its scary, but just keep him comfortable as you can

103, while it looks Chat Icon is really not that bad. The Motrin will likely take it down. If not, alternate with Tylenol. I don't bring to the pediatrician until we've had a fever for over 24 hours.

I wouldn't ever use a bath to try to bring down a fever as it can increase the risk of having a febrile seizure. Febrile seizures aren't dangerous, but they ARE terrifiying to see.

Hope he feels better soon!Chat Icon

Re: 103 fever?

I just would like to add that every child is different. If his temp goes down with the Motrin and he is acting OK then wait until the morning. There is always PM pediatrics if he is not OK. DD#1 as a baby would get lethargic and her eyes rolling back with vomiting from a fever of 102-103(needed to be in the hospital) while DD#2 had 104.8-105 last year and was pretty OK. She was slightly letharic and obviously not super happy but was OK. We called the ped., put her in a tepid bath a few times and went to the Ped in the morning. We did the whole Tylenol, Motrin thing.
