Does anyone "split the cost" of anything with a neighbor?
The fence questions got me wondering...
Does anyone split the costs of anything with a neighbor? We were asked to share some landscaping costs, but I declined. I was afraid of setting a precedent and not being able to turn back if times got tough for us. Besides, the hedges that my neighbor wanted me to "share the cost" of trimming are 100% on his property...
Instead, my DH just cuts the hedge every now and then on his own and we'll shovel the guy's sidewalk or cut his small area of lawn from time to time in the spirit of being neighborly. So, we get along very well and help each other out. I just don't want to involve money and then not be able to turn back in the future, kwim?

When we recently replaced our fence, a neighbor on one side of us offered to pay 1/2 for the side that divided our yards.
I didn't want to accept it, but he was insistent. He said he helped his yard look nicer and he appreciated it.

When my parents added pine trees between their home and the neighbors they split it, and on the other side of the house they split a small fence with their other neighbors.

It really depends on your neighbor
We did all pvc fencing, we paid for it, our neighbor on one side offered but we didn't accept, he did pay for his own new gate on his side.
Our other neighbor, she is so nice and lives alone, so we paid for a new gate for her, and she was very happy. It was the right thing to do with her having to live with the construction for so long. everyones situation is different

Our neighbors PVC fence that shares our property went down in the storm - we offered to split the cost.

Our house is attached so when we did some landscaping work that was going to affect our neighboors house they gave us money towards it. And when we had our chimney work down; the people next door gave us money towards it since it ultimately affected their chimney too.

We offered to split the cost of a PVC fence that is shared and our wonderful neighbors declined and said we have made such improvements to the property already that they would take care of it. We love our neighbors!

we tried to offer our neighbor money towards the fence that bordered our yard but he insisted no bc he was the one who let the original fence get to be soo bad and he was embarrassed enough for the summer we had to look at the old fence
