Help

I am so upset and frustrated. My DD has been holding in her poop, sorry TMI, but now she has a real problem, she is so backed up, moody and wont eat. Dr. put her on Miralax, and still nothing. I dont know what to do. The more I read about it, the more I get upset. Any advice would really be appreciated.
I am sooooooo upset right now.

Re: Help

DS does the same thing and it gets me so upset because I can see him straining so hard to hold it IN! Ped says it's a control issue and the only thing you can really do is to give him prune juice etc. to get it to the point that he CANT hold it.

Re: Help

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm so sorry about that.
Embarrassing to say, but I had issues just like that when I was real young. Please, my mom had to use suppository(sorry TMI) when I was a little toddler. I would freak out. She took me to the Doc many times. I hated going and would scream
BTW..
I'm totally normal now and I think the opposite. I announce when I go. DH loves that... LOL! Yeah, right!

It'll be fine.

Re: Help

How much Miralax did the Dr put her on? Maybe you can up the dosage? Not sure how old she is, but pureed prunes or prune juice even should help as well. If she won't drink it, give it to her with an eye dropper like you would with medicine. Thats what I had to do with my DD when she was about 6 months old. Took a while to get the juice in, but after an hour or 2, she went. Not to sound gross, but is she pushing? My ped had actually told me thatif you can see (like physically looking at her butt) that it's there but she can't push it out, that they might need 'help'. Its a last resort I guess, but maybe she's in pain. My ped had told me that if that was the case, to put her in the baby tub in warm water and that may also help. Hope she feels better soon!

My DD does the same thing and always has. I up her fiber intake and give her suppositories. Neither really help that much...the girl has buns of steel. I do try to explain that it wouldn't hurt if she didn't try to stop it. Sometimes that helps, sometimes it doesn't.

Re: Help

My niece does the same thing (she is almost 4 and has been doing it since potty training). she holds it in and refuses to poop. The ped told my sister to give her the miralax cocktail (Miralax laced jiuce) everyday for 2 weeks. That helps reset her system and then she is fine for a while.

Re: Help

My DS is just coming out of this at the age of four, thank god! It felt like it was never going to end so I know what you're feeling.

I tried to integrate a LOT of fiber into his diet, high fiber cereal in the morning, apple with his lunch, everything whole grain, lots of fluids. After you've done everything you can to make going easier for them, I would constantly have to reassure him and also be consistent about having him sit on the toilet every single day. I would sit with him in the bathroom for an hour, have him sit by himself and go in to reassure him every few minutes, eventually he resisted less and does fine now.
