Internal Snyogram vs. External
Im really nervous! I went to the dr today and I am suspsed to be 9 1/2 weeks with my second child and she did a external and could not detect a heartbeat. She said it might be too early and to come back to have an internal done. I have had a misscarriage before and am freaking out. I don't go back till monday. Has anyone had this? I am hoping it is just too early for the external and that the internal will pick it up.

I dont really know why they tried the external! I think its too early for an external!

I thought they did internals up to 12 weeks for that reason...bc it is hard to detect a HB from the external

I wouldn't panic, I didn't have an external sono until 12 weeks. All internal before that.

Somebody posted about this a few weeks ago, and of course, she went back for an internal and everything was fine. IMO 9 1/2 wks is too early for an external. Don't worry too much 
ETA: I didn't have an external until 16wks!

I agree with PP. When I went in for my 9week appointment. My dr. went right for an internal b/c he said that it might be hard too see/hear a heartbeat that early with a doppler.

Definitely too early for an external. I had my first external at 11w 4d (because the doppler didn't work) and teh Dr. told me before he started not to be alarmed if we didn't see anything because it might still be too early.

I went at 9 weeks 2 days exactly too, and they did an internal. That is just awful of the doctor to make you worry, and have to wait until Monday. I am sure everything is ok. Try not to panic. It is very early to pick up anything on an external b/c the ovaries are closer to the surface then the uterus. Normally they don't to externals until much later on.

Did she use a doppler or was it an external sonogram? I always had external sonograms during my pregnancy. At my first sono, the tech did say that she might not be able to get everything with the external sono, but she'd try. She was able to get the measurements, but I think that was b/c the machine was very up to date and I had a full bladder. If the machine was older, it may have been more difficult to see everything.
Why didn't you get an internal sonogram right after? I'm so sorry you have to wait. It's pretty common for people to have internal sonos during the first trimester. I hope everything is ok.

They did this to me. They tried to do an external when I was 6w3 days and couldn't find the heartbeat. They made me come back the next day for an internal and everything was fine. I would be angry that they are making you wait so long. I would have demanded they do an internal the next day .

At 10w we switched from external to internal in 2 minutes... I went and peed and we started over... Same machine, just a wand... Sux u had to make a diff appt!!

I agree-waaayyy too early for an external. My OB wouldn't even try it as you can also be measuring behind (I was 5 days behind). Try not to freak.

Seriously! It's the same exact machine!
I had an internal even at my 12w appointment! My ultrascreen was external. Then my 16 week was the first external at my doctor's office.
9w is way too early for external - I'm sure all is ok!

Then she tried the external. Why at that point when she didn"t get anything she didn't find a way to get me an internal I don't know. Then when I went to make the apt for the syno they told me weeks... so I pushed for the next apt which was monday with the holiday because they are closed. Of course I am thinking the worst, but I will hope for the best.

Please don't worry - my doctor didn't do an external until 12 weeks. All my u/s's before then were internal (they do them in the office too) and I don't think my doctor even uses doppler at all since I'm almost 33 weeks and have never had it done. 9 1/2 weeks is way too early. I remember at my 12-week, I asked about this when it became clear it was going to be external and the doctor said I graduated and that they should be able to see but if not, they'd do an internal so even at 12 weeks, there was the possibility of needing to do an internal so as much as you can, try to stay calm about this. I know that's easier said than done.

my doc tried to do an external at 16w and he still found it better to do an internal.. dont stress many docs do not do external till 12w

I've never heard of anyone being able to hear the heartbeat with a doppler at 9 weeks. That's way too early.Most doctors won't even try to use one until the second trimester. I also can't believe your doctor would be willing to do an external sono and make you wait for an internal one. That's really awful. Was it the doctor who did the sono or a technician? She should've given you an internal sono right then.
I'm so sorry you're going through this.

with ds they did both and external and internal... with this preg they just did and internal and heard the heartbeat and that was at 6 weeks.... i just dont understand why they wouldnt do the internal at that time.
