People who moved out of the city...

Not sure if this is the best place to post this but for those who lived in the city and moved out to LI (or any suburbs really), how long did it take for you to adjust?

I moved to LI a month ago after almost 10yrs in the city and honestly so far, I HATE the commute and REALLY miss the city. I took the subway up to my old neighborhood on Fri night (my old commute home) to meet a friend for dinner and got teary eyed. I do love our new town but it just doesn't compare. I swear I think I'd sell the house and move back tomorrow if I could except that DH and DS seem to love it Chat Icon

Did anyone else feel like this? How long until you got over it?

I actually didn't miss the city THAT much but I didn't live there as long as you did. I HATED the commute which was longer that yours and eventually took a huge pay cut a found a job on LI.

I think once you get to know your neighborhood and neighbors you will start to like it.

Hang in there!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: People who moved out of the city...

It took awhile. I lived in Manhattan for 13 years, and only moved to LI after DH and I got engaged. I had withdrawal for months...but then one day I just started thinking of LI as home. It was almost like flipping a switch. The commute probably took about 6 months to get used to. And honestly, at this point, I'm done with the city. Aside from work, I have ZERO desire to go in on the weekends...feel like I've BTDT. And I LOVE having a car and not having to rely on public transportation...thats a MAJOR plus!

ETA: Its been a few years and I still can't go to my old neighborhood...I get choked up and teary like you....

We moved out of the city a year and a half ago. While I still miss being able to walk everywhere and the endless options for food/entertainment, once I spent a summer on LI in our house I was glad to be here.

Re: People who moved out of the city...

DH and I lived in the city for 4.5 years (after we were married - we both lived there b/f as well and went to school there) we moved when DS was about 3 months old (almost two years ago now). I'll be honest - although I have adjusted in many ways I STILL miss the city constantly. I don't commute but my DH does so we see him SO much less - and I miss the easy lifestyle of the city - being able to walk everywhere etc. etc. etc. I sometimes have dreams that we still live in the city - no joke - i'll be strolling down the street with my DS in the stroller - meeting daddy for lunch and then shopping...And, then I wake up - how pathetic is that Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

In all seriousness though I am pretty much adjusted now and there are MANY things that are much better here than in the city and it is much better here for DS than in the city so that helps me forget how much i miss it!

It didn't take me long at all. It was hard to adjust when I was commuting to work - my commute went from 15 minutes to 2 hours. I did a month of that and then I quit my job to be a SAHM. It was really easy to adjust after that. The only things I miss are the convenience, our Saturday morning coffees in Central Park, and walking all over. But those have been replaced with a bigger home, a yard, and our new favorite area parks and beaches. All of which my nearly 3yo DD loves much more than she does the city perks. Chat Icon

Re: People who moved out of the city...

8 years later I still miss the city a lot. I lived there for only 4 years and then for the next 4 years my friends were all still in the city. Then I started to date DH while he still lived there. DH didn't like living in the city as much as I did. LIW and LIF gave me more of a social life on LI and that has helped a lot!!!!!!!

Re: People who moved out of the city...

I lived in the city all my life up until a year ago when I got married and moved (all in 1 month) to LI. It was not easy at first. I think the hardest part for me was adjusting to the commute. Mine went from 15 min (from bed to desk) to 1 1/2 hr. I felt overwhelmed, and it started to really wear me out. I still don't like it, but I AM use to it. You really CAN get use to anything. Books, magz, ipod, it all helps, I try to look at it in a positive way, instead of focusing on the time being "wasted". Like anything else, it is how you choose to see it.

That being said, the quality of life IS better and I know it will be even better when little people come into our lives. It was the right decision for us, but I can totally see how the "GRASS" isn't always greener.

And, like someone told me when I was going thru it, nothing is forever, you can always move back:) Good luck.

Re: People who moved out of the city...

I lived in the Bx pretty much my whole life... last summer DH & I moved out to Farmingdale... DH adjusted immediately since hes lived on LI before... me... not so much! I felt out of my element... Not being able to just hop on the 6 train and take a very short commute into the city is something I miss... I now feel like its a whole project to travel there and its like I dread it...

Thankfully Farmingdale is filled with stores and anything else you could need which helps tremendously! One thing that I love about LI is the ability to actually be able to park on my block!!!! And most of the time, I get the spot right in front of my house... This was like unheard of in the bx....

That being said... I now love it here and moving to Holbrook next month! Didnt want to go that far out bc now it's going to be like an hour to get to the city, but I'm looking forward to it...

Re: People who moved out of the city...

I think I'm the opposite. I grew up in Brooklyn, moved to Queens in my 20's and was always jealous of my cousins who grew up on LI.
I moved to LI a few years ago when i met DH and I just feel at home. I feel like i've always been meant to be there.

I hate the traffic and congestion in Manhattan and Queens.
