Moms who make babyfood- i have a few questions!!

ok, i am armed with babyfood recipe books and i am well aware of wholesomebabyfoods.com
however, i have a few questions about getting started with shopping etc

the first time you started purreeing your own food:
did you buy a variety of veggies and puree them and freeze right away?

What was the quantity of veggies you bought? ex. did you buy one zucchini?two? - how many feedings did you get out it?

i want to get started this week and my main concern is how much to buy, how much to make in one day so that i can start a stock pile in the freezer..

when you first got started did you have a variety of food in the freezer ready to go? or where you making it daily?
etc.

any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
thanks!

I started with one or two veggies at a time. I can't remember how much fresh produce I used for each variety, but I would say that I always ended up making more than I thought I would. You actually have to add a lot of water to make it the right consistency for babies just starting out on solids.

Umm...it sort of depended on the food.

I found that you needed to buy less of the "creamy" veggies where you didn't have to add too much water. E.g., Sweet potatoes, butternut squash, peas. Two sweet potatoes made a lot of puree for me!

Now that I think about it, it seems weird that you would buy less veggies the less water you add...hmm.

Anyway, I would start with two of each veggie and see how it goes. It also depends on how often a food is in rotation. In the beginning when I was was only give 3-4 types of veggies I had to make a lot more at once but as the options grew, I found it made more sense to make less of each item at once.

Hope that helps!

Hi. We started with one veggie at a time. So, I made two sweet potatoes to start, which made a lot of puree! Then after he tried it/liked it, I froze it so I had it. Then the next week I bought squash and did the same. After I had introduced a bunch of things, I would make a variety on the weekend so I had it for the week.

I also found that some stuff did not freeze well (zucchini/summer squash) so I made it as we went.

Re: Moms who make babyfood- i have a few questions!!

I just started a few weeks ago. I have made apples, pears and sweet potatoes so far. I did small quantities just to start out. 2 apples, then 2 pears (DD likes these a lot) and then 1 sweet potato. I still have a lot of the sweet potato. I used the special food tray to freeze into cubes (kidCo) and it filled almost two trays. I think there are 7 cubes in each tray.

I have also been mixing the food into her cereal. DD is 5 1/2 months old and she has been eating twice a day. cereal and a fruit in the morning and cereal and a veggie at night. Nurses in between all day/night.

have fun!
