Yeast Rash help please....

Ryan was on antibiotics for 2 weeks post surgery.

I think he may have developed a yeast rash down there. At first I thought it was diaper rash. But it isn't subsiding with any diaper rash cream and/or Aquaphor.

I plan on calling the ped first thing Monday morning. But anything I can do in the mean time?

DD is prone to these unfortunately Chat Icon

Until you can get to the Dr., I'd suggest using a clean, dry towel or washcloth to dry that area as well as possible during every diaper change. I think for short term, you can use a little bit of cornstarch to keep the moisture at bay (like, real cornstarch, the kind you use for baking), but you can't use that for too long.

The Dr. will most likely give you a Nystatin prescription that will clear it right up Chat Icon

Re: Yeast Rash help please....

That is most likely thrush! Make sure you get treated to if you are still BF b/c you can pass it back to each other. There is treatment for him and you but most docs will tell you you don't need to be treated but my LC told me the Mom ALWAYS needs to be treated to ensure it doesn't get passed back and forth.

Re: Yeast Rash help please....

This happened to DD awhile back. The Ped told us to get acidophilis from the health food store and sprinkle it on her diaper area- and also give her 1 tsp by mouth (we mixed it with her oatmeal).

Worked like a charm!

I highly recommend Lotrimin (use the one for jock itch). Twice a day - first and last diaper change.

Re: Yeast Rash help please....

You can get Florastor Kids from the pharmicist, you don't need a prescription. It is a probiotic that adds the good microbes (that counter yeast) back in. Also make sure he eats yogurt at least once a day.

I think the doc can give a topical for the rash but it's best to treat it from the inside (food and supplement wise) and the outside.

Poor little guy. I hope he gets better quickly!

Re: Yeast Rash help please....

We dealt with a HORRIBLE diaper Yeast infection with Alexa for 5 weeks until we finally got the right system.

The Dr will probably prescribe Nystatin ointment to be used 3 X a day. You need to use another diaper cream ( We use Burts bees) ON TOP of the Nystatin to keep the medication in and make a moisture barrier on the skin.

Make sure YOU FINISH the ointment even if the rash is gone.... I can and most likely WILL come back!!!! Yeast can still be present even if you don't see it.

After a bath I would keep Alexa's diaper off for about 1/2 and hour and feed her to "air her out".

Change the diaper every time you know he is dirty and at least every 2-3 hours.... Yeast Breeds on moisture and warmth.

It wasn't until we started her on an oral probiotic (with at least 3 live cultures) that the yeast really went away. It literally cleared up in uner 48 hours!!!!

You have to be VERY careful with a yeast rash because they can develop open sores that can become bacterial infections and then infect their blood and they can get septic (blood infection)

FM if you have any questions!

Hope he feels better soon!!!

For now, I'd use lotrimin and your usual diaper cream. Once you get to the doctor, they will probably give you Nystatin to use a few times a day. Keep using it for a few days even after the rash is gone.

My son had a yeast rash for about a month and a half!!! NOTHING worked! The nystatin, acidophilus, creams, etc.-nothing. A friend of mine took her son to a dermatologist for the same thing. He said to put a little cortisone cream on the rash. Well, I did that and the rash went away OVERNIGHT!!! It was amazing! Then I put tons of aquaphor on him and it never came back again! Try it! You don't need to put too much cortisone on. Just a small amount should do the trick. Good luck!
