How big is your hospital bag?

No, this is not a riddle. Chat Icon

This is my next major project... I am trying to buy some hospital friendly clothes and sort out my nursing wardrobe.

Anyway, the hospital bag list seems SOOOOOOO long!! I feel like I need to take my biggest piece of luggage in order to fit everything, but that seems totally ridiculous.

A friend who is a L&D nurse said-- just bring in what you need for labor, and have your husband bring the other stuff in to you once you are in recovery. So, I guess that means pack TWO bags.

What is everyone else doing?

What hospital bag! Chat Icon Chat Icon I haven't even thought about it yet!

I'm planning on packing everything at once, I can't rely on DH to bring other stuff from home, without constantly forgetting something or calling me 20 times asking me what's what, and where is it.

Re: How big is your hospital bag?

i am taking 2 bags....having a scheduled section so I can plan a little more but I plan on having one with nursing clothes..hopsital clothes and one with baby stuff..also this way theres always an extra bag at the hospital for DH to take tthings home in.....I am a heavy packer LOL but my bag is I would say a little biigger then a beach bag. My mom actually sent it to me for xmas from bath and body works..its perfect because its washable(i hate hospital smells) and something I would DEFNIATELY use again. It's actually perfcet for a beach-pool diaper bag.

I have it all in one bag. I am not a huge packer to beign with. I have about 3 prs of comfy pants, two prs of sleep shorts and about 4 tops that I can sleep in and or be casual, shoudl I have a visitor. I just need to put underwear and clothes to wear home in there. I have his stuff in my diaper bag. I am bringing the boppy and two pillows.

Oh the original question, the bag is NOT big, maybe 2 1/2 feet hight and about 2 ft wide. If that makes any sense.

Re: How big is your hospital bag?

I have one large canvas tote packed so far, but I think I am transferring everything over to my small suitcase on wheels. I have my cosmetic bag with all the toiletries and hairdryer/brush/etc on stand-by in the bathroom. I've been playing with my "birthing ball" but we'll probably deflate and just blow it back up at the hospital if I feel I am able to use it at that point LOL.

I brought one bag (a rolling bag that is carry on size). And carried pillows and a small plastic bag with a few things I would want only during delivery and then my DH or parents could take it home right after. I saw people with anywhere from 1 very small bag - to others with huge rolling things and 1-2 additional bags. Honestly I thought I needed a lot of stuff but could have done without most of the stuff I brought in the end.

Re: How big is your hospital bag?

You can have your husband bring a fresh change of clothes each day instead of bringing so much at once. I brought a lot but it was nice to be comfortable with my own things.

Re: How big is your hospital bag?

I have a regular duffel bag. i packed a nursing nightgown & robe that I probably won't use, two coming home outfits depending on DD's size, a baby blanket, toiletries, overnight maxipads, makeup, the cord blood kit and socks & underwear. I still need to throw in an outfit for me to wear home.

Re: How big is your hospital bag?

I used the carry-on size suitcase from my luggage set. I can say that I did pack alot. In addition to everything for me, I had clothes & toiletries for DH in there in case we were in L&D for a while and he wanted to change, I had snacks, I had towels, etc, etc, etc. This time DH gets nothing packed in my bag, and I'm not bringing snacks or anything else. If I want it, DH can get it. I did bring my hairdryer and straightener which I used only on the last day, so DH could have brought them to me. I also had clothes for the baby, plus her coming home outfit. I dressed her every day (in one of those gowns with the open bottom, but she was dressed). This time I will def. bring less clothes and toiletries for myself too, and will have a much smaller bag.

Re: How big is your hospital bag?

My bag is a medium sized Hello Kitty duffle bag. Shoot I really haven't finished packing, All I have is gown, underwear and slippers pretty much. I need to start looking into more stuff.
I don't think you'll need a whole load of stuff specially if you're only staying for 2 days with a vaginal birth.

Re: How big is your hospital bag?

I am actually re-thinking now to bring a smaller bag with "just the necessities" when I go into labor and just having my parents/husband bring the rest of the stuff (ie. clothes for baby) another day.

Re: How big is your hospital bag?

I had a duffle bag and pretty much fit everything I needed. I had a v-birth both times so I didn't need to bring extra clothes.

Basically I brought some toiletries, underwear, bra, socks, nice robe, slippers and a change of clothes for both myself and baby to come home in.

If I needed more my mom or DH would have brought it.

from a BTDT perspective. Don't bring a ton of stuff. For the baby you only need an outfit to go home in. Let the baby wear their stuff while in the hospital.

Day one you will wear your hospital gown most of the time as they need to come and check down there often.

I had 2 c-sections and brought comfy sweat outfits and P.J.'s (I wouldn't buy anything new as you will be bleeding *c and vag heavily after and it could get stained) stick with dark colors.

I brought shampoo and conditioner. My hair dryer and basics necessities.

Bring lip balm of some sort and hand creme. I wore flip flops instead of slippers and could use them in the shower as well.

Your DH can always bring something if you ABSOLUTELY need it.

Chat Icon My sentiments exactly!

I haven't packed yet, but my friends bought me a huge canvas tote at my shower (I think to lug toys around when Beepers grows up), but I figured I'd use it for the hospital stay.

Bring snacks and your cell phone charger!

I used the large Vera Bradley Duffle and it was fine.
