How would you know if you had blood clotting issues?

Is this something that is tested for? Or do they wait for a problem to occur??

I do get clots during AF (sorry TMI)

Can you request the test or they have to see a problem first??

Re: How would you know if you had blood clotting issues?

I think they would only test if they suspect a problem. When I switched to Cornell my RE ran a bunch of blood tests on me and I found out I have a clotting disorder. I don't think clotting during AF necessarily indicates you would have this.

Just wondering how they come to suspect a problem...What are the signs?

I am at Cornell also...you think these are standard tests?

Thanks

I don't think these are standard tests unless you've had a few failed IVFs. My RE ran them after I had a chemical. I don't think all REs run them so I'm really glad mine did. Who are you seeing at Cornell?

I believe they do these tests after 2 m/c.. Which i believe is time wasting.. I think if you have had a problem conceiving and are going for IVF or IUI thy should do these test first.. It saves alot of wasted time.. But maybe the insurance companies wont pay unless they have more evidence.. I am not sure..

I totally know what you mean. I would ask Goldshlag to run them. I'm seeing Chung and it was one of the 1st things he sent me for. I've only had one failed fresh cycle and one failed FET (plus 5 failed IUIs and now a canceled IVF!). I take baby aspirin everyday and I have to take Lovenox after the transfer and when I get pg.

Re: How would you know if you had blood clotting issues?

I asked for the testing to be done after I had a miscarriage. I w as told they usually only do it after you have had two or more. I said that I didn't want to wait to have another one to find out if I have a problem, so they did it, and it turned out I did have a clotting issue. Now, my hematologist said that the protein that I have a deficiency in is commonly low in pregnant women, and because the testing was done 6 weeks after my m/c, it could have been "leftover." But she didn't want to take any chances, and I have been on lovenox the whole pregnancy. She will test me again after I have the babies to see if I really have it.

I completely agree with this. I had a disagreement with my old RE regarding waiting m/c's to have this test.It is completely ridiculous that this is the "industry" standard. It's a simple blood test that you don't have to be pregnant to do. They put you through all the other excruciating crap, you would think something as simple as this would be standard protocol.

I had it done after numerous failed IVF's...it can be the cause of implantation failure...

Def ask Dr G!

I had the tests run b/c I have endo which is believed to be an immune issue. I was told I have APS and was treated with Lovenox during my second IVF cycle. Unfortunately it has not helped me get that elusive BFP!

I am now consulting with an immune specialist so hopefully that may help.

Totally agree! I did this early on after my 1st mc. At the time, my insurance did not cover the bloodwork but, totally worth it in my opinion.

Re: How would you know if you had blood clotting issues?

I had a family history of genetic clotting factors so my ob/gyn tested me before we started ttc. Luckily they did not make me wait for a m/c since according to my doctor that would never have happened since I would never have been able to get pregnant in the first place.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of blood clotting disorders did you have that would have prevented you from becoming pregnant?
