Not all of them do. Some people get extreme pleasure out of their career and would not change the choices they made. Question for you - if Obama wins, are you also concerned about him looking back years from now and wishing that he he hadn't been President so he could have spent more time with his kids?
You are absolutely right (re: some get extreme pleasure from careers). And should Obama get in, I don't think he'll wish he didn't (in terms of parenting time) but I'm sure he'll have regrets over spending time with his kids. I think that naturally comes with the territory, right? Always wishing you had 5 more minutes. It'l like that Erma Bombeck letter where she wishes she didn't worry about her dress and rather, rolled around with her kids. I think everyone has regrets when it comes to spending time with family.

I'm sorry, and I know I will get flamed for this, buy why on earth would you WANT this job with a four month old? Sorry, I know I'll hear "You just took women back 25 years!!" but seriously, a baby??? I fully support that women can do things 10X better, faster and cleaner than men. And I also thinks it's about freaken time that we have a women in such high power. But not with a baby.
This is the kind of job that OWNS you for several years. This is not a job that it's okay to not give your all. So something has to take a backseat. What's it going to be? The country or her baby?
Don't get me wrong, I know she has other kids but they are at an age, even the second youngest, where they don't need mom as much. I know lots of women in politics have babies and families all the time, but this isn't just ANY political job.
I want to know, and yes, it's sad, that for anyone in office, this country comes before family because that is what the roles of President and Vice President require. This baby doesn't deserve to take the backseat.
I know there are people who want to see her in office to show the world that women CAN do it all!!! That babies can't hold them back. And it's true, babies don't HAVE to hold someone back from having a successful, demanding career. Babies are not the death of careers. But we also are in a country where mothers get 6 weeks maternity and women are desperate to have our country follow Europe's model.
I'm all over the place in what I think about this and I know MANY of you will disagree. So flame away...
I fully disagree with this statement. Why can't she be VP? Why can't her DH help? I am sure she will have help in Washington - she won't be coming home from work and have to wash dishes and do laundry. There are lots of SAHM that have nannies so they can play tennis, go shopping, have a break. As far as women wanting to have a longer maternity leave, like Europe, I think it is mostly about the CHOICE to stay home. As someone who went back to work as an attorney after 3 months off, I would have loved to have a CHOICE as to whether to go back. I think it is really narrowminded to say that she can't be a VP b/c she has an infant. I hope people at my job don't think I should not be at my job b/c I have an infant.

I really urge everyone who likes Palin to really look at her policies. This shouldn't just be about male/female. I agree, its great she's a woman, and I'd love a female president. That said, she's very conservative. Now if you are conservative and agree with her policies, then for you I'm happy you have someone you like. However, if you don't agree with her policies, don't let the fact that she's female alone sway you, its what she stands for that should make the difference.

I have to say it doesn't bother me one bit that she has a 4 month old...like others have said, if this were a MAN it wouldn't be a question. So many people will probably step up to help raise this child. ESPECIALLY a special needs child with Down Syndrome. I'm sure she will have ample time with him as well as her husband, nanny/medical staff etc...
I give her a lot of credit and I liked hearing her speak. I don't love McCain whatsoever and as of now Obama has my vote but I do like her!

I completely agree.
i agree as well. she is extremely conservative. although i'd love to see a woman in office, her ideas are completely opposite of mine (as are mccain's) and i therefore could never vote for her--woman or not.
as with her being a mother--it enrages me that people say she shouldn't go for this job because she has a child. so what!!! obama has 2 kids and it never once was stated that he shouldn't be president because he has to raise his kids. people just assume that because she's a woman she can't handle both. she already has a career in government and is doing just fine. her husband is a parent as well. he won't be vice president and will be raising the kids along with her. i can't stand how backward this country still is when it comes to women and careers. we will never be seen as equals if people still feel this well--especially if women feel this way

Yes, it is narrowminded to say she CAN'T be VP b/c she has a baby. However...that is NOT what I am saying. I'm also not saying she SHOULDN'T either. I agree in that I hope people don't think someone is capable of working at a job b/c they have an infant. I also doubt her baby will suffer from neglect. Sure, many people will step up and help out...there is no doubt about that.

I don't think I'm imposing a glass ceiling and I apologize if anyone feels that way. Trust me, I am all for women to get the equality, earning power, credit, and power that is deserved and rivals that of men. Trust me on that. However, I also apologize that I feel that her baby should be her focus right now. I will say that I don't know her, I don't know how she works things in her life, I don't know her priorities, etc and I am not doubting her skills. And if she can do it all, then she will certainly be an inspiration to women everywhere and it is something that more women need to see. And she probably may think that it's about time she does this for herself, which is even better. But in my opinion, and that's all this is, just an opinion, I can't imagine putting all this before a 4 month baby.
And maybe in some strange twisted way, she is doing this FOR her 4 month baby, to break those glass ceilings that not only women face, but people with disabilities face, too. And if so, that I greatly admire. Maybe she is the Martha Stewart of politics. And if she gets in, WOW!!! But I will also say that this job is not an everyday job and who knows, maybe it's not as stressful as I'm thinking and that she'll have lots of time to devote to her baby. But that's what I am getting at. IMO, this is not the kind of job that a *baby* belongs in the picture. If that's narrowminded so be it. I prefer to look at it as being realistic.  And...they are not babies forever.

you're entitled to your opinion.
IMO, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am not at all surprised she took it.

I think it's sad that if Obama had 5 kids- the youngest being 4 months old- this topic would not even be up for discussion. There would be no comments about him missing out on time with his kids or being able to juggle being President AND a father.. these things just wouldn't even come up.
I'm not saying it's sad that you think she should want more time with her kids- i'm saying it's sad that there's such a double standard in this country.
But, there's double standards all around. People keep saying how they question if Palin would be able to step up to the plate should anything happen to McCain. They focus on McCain's health and how "close to death he is", yet, no one questions if Biden would be able to fill that spot either, given the fact that he's undergone sugery for 2 life threatening brain aneurysms, and that they could resurface at anytime. It's a sad (and disgusting) thing to have to consider that Obama is at such a great risk of assasination (and it makes me sick to even think about that), but if we're going to, so loosely, throw around the term "a heartbeat away from becoming president"... let's look at BOTH sides abilities and obstacles.

Listen, I'm one of the biggest idealists. I'd love to see her doing this fantasic job, showing women all over the world that she can keep that soccer mom image and carpool, bake brownies for her daughter's bake sale, tuck in her kids at night, read them a story, bring her son for shots (should she choose to vaccinate!), teach him how to be a capable, self-relying person, all the while creating relationships with leaders of foreign countries with her teething baby on her hip, a la Diane Keaton in Baby Boom. Trust me, I want to see that.
But then the realistic side of me chimes in. I'd like to think that my VP works 24/7, 7 days a week, for 4 years give or take. yes, I expect my VP to possess some kind of super human powers. Maybe not so realistic there. But still, realistically, this is a job that requires a lot of sacrifice and man or woman, you take on this job and something has to give. This is not a 9-5 job where someone comes home and doesn't think about work anymore. So can anyone here honestly say that they could do this job AND still manage to be a mom to an infant? And do both things well? We are all only human. I give her credit for taking this on. And if she can do, then she will have raised the level of expectations exceedingly high. But again, she is, first and foremost, a human being.

She is the governor and seems to be doing just fine handling that. Most jobs are not 9-5 anymore and most women do them without 1/90th the amount of help she will receive if she becomes VP. Am I doing my job as mother and lawyer "well"? I would like to think so.
ETA: Your points are not falling on deaf ears - I think about them everyday as a working mother

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think the fact that she has an infant shouldn't stop her though. As others have said, her DH or maybe she has family members who will help. She also has some older children who could help as well.
I was thinking about this, could I do this with my baby? Hard to say, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Me too! As much as I would LOVE a woman in the white house, I don't want THIS woman.
I just could never vote for a candidate who is not pro-choice, woman or not.
I didn't know anything about Palin so I looked her bio this morning and it made me cringe. I was impressed with the way she stood up to corruption in the Alaskan government, but I was not happy at all with her views.
-she is very much for drilling in Alaska
-she voted against naming polar bears as endangered (i'm assuming because it will interfere with the drilling)
-she doesn't believe humans have any impact on global warming
-she thinks it's ok to teach religious theories in the class room
-she wants to amend the constitution to ban gay marriage
-she is not pro-choice

there is a chance that the 4 mth old baby won't hinder her from her job because rumor has it that it's not even hers..
these pictures are JACKED from another board that has been discussing her..
Lets do the math..
The baby is four months old, so it would have been born in MAY.. which means in February she would have been around 7 months pregnant. (May being the 40 weeks or 10th mth, April being 36 weeks or 9th month, March being 32 weeks or 8th month and February being 28 weeks or 7mths). .She announced her pregnancy at 7mths and everyone was surprised. she didnt hardly look pregnant at 7months..

Yeah- there's a whole other thread dedicated to that. Not flaming, but this looks SO petty. If it turns out to be true, the sh*t's going to hit the fan and it won't be very good, but until a CREDIBLE source actually provides info on this, i think it makes those that are subscribing to it look silly- really grasping at straws.
I'm not even going to respond to the other cliche comments...
