Re: Lexapro and pregnancy

You need to call your doctor immediatelty about either weaning or switching. I was on Lexipro before TTC and was told it is absolutely not safe in pg. Don't freak out though- you and the baby don't share a bloodstream for another few weeks.

There ARE other meds out there that are considered *safe*.

Re: Lexapro and pregnancy

I have no experience with this.

But def call the dr asap to find out what to do. The first few weeks of pg is when the neural tube closes in the fetus, you don't want to risk anything. HTHChat Icon

Re: Lexapro and pregnancy

I plan on calling tom. to ask about the meds and to make an appointment.

I plan on not taking them anymore but I was taking them until I found out yesterday that I was preggo again.

I hope it doesnt harm the baby. Chat Icon

Re: Lexapro and pregnancy

I never took it myself, but I used to work in Pharmaceuticals. I know for sure, that this is a med that you should just not stop cold turkey. You will need to titrate your dose down to nothing. Meaning, you you don't want to go from say x mg a day to 0 mg. there may be side effects.

I would call your Doctor asap Monday morning, in the meantime if you are nervous, call a pharmacist. They are usually very helpful.

Good Luck

Re: Lexapro and pregnancy

i went through this when I first got PG. I wasn't on the meds at the time (had been on and off for the 3 years prior) but OB thought that I should go back on because she thought my anxiety would come back as I got further along. it was strange because I felt fine and wasn't sure why the doc would promote me going on meds when I didn't need them at the time.

So I decided to consult my psychiatrist who prescribed. At the time I was 6 weeks. He said that although he has plenty of patients on lexapro while pregnant he didn't feel comfortable putting me on them, especially in the first trimester, when I cleary was feeling great. He said we would evaluate after the first trimester. And I never wound up needing them. In fact, that entire 9 months has been the only time in 4 years I haven't felt anxious.

This category of drug has been deemed ok to take during pg. Since you are already on them I wouldn't recommend coming off until you speak to a doc...and even then I don't think you necessarily have to come off of them. I'm not sure what your "normal" is. If you are a wreck when you're not on the meds than I think you should stay on them. See what your doc says.
