Re: do you speak to your DC in another language other than English

Sometimes I speak to DD in some of my rusty high school Italian.

DH speaks to DD in Polish but not consistently. I think if he was around his family more he would speak it more but since he is here with me he speaks more English.

I keep trying to get DH to speak to DD in Polish BUT repeat in English so I can learn but I think that is too confusing for him.

When my twins were born I wanted their grandfather to speak to them only in Italian. He was off the boat and their grandmother was 1st generation. They wouldnt for some reason. To this day I still feel like my girls missed out on something.....

My husband and my MIL speak to my son in Cantonese (Chinese dialect). I understand some Cantonese and I am learning new words as they speak to him. It is a great experience!

Italian. They understand SO much, and my older boys are getting to the point of "I want more" in terms of learning it. they are fascinated at the different languages, how I structure sentences that starts to make sense to them, etc. I use nonverbal cues to let them understand as Im talking.

I should just talk Italian only, but it's SO Hard to be disciplined at that. My 5yr old is even reading some childrens ITalian books with me and is like OMGG HOW COOL !!! Chat Icon

I feel strongly about them being fluent so im being harder and harder on them about it. and I admire those parents that ARE very strict about speaking only that language fromthe start.

Ive also been told to let children learn one language fluently FIRST and then worry about another. I dont know if I agree (or care to follow that Chat Icon)

what are other opinions on that ?

My in laws speak to DS in Italian. DH and I are both Italian, but we don't know it well enough to speak in to him. So he gets Italian from grandpa & grandma, English from everyone else.

I know some moms(and dads) on LIF speak other languages besides English , I was wandering if you speak to your DC in another language other than English?

I guess I should answer my own Q( don't know why I didn't do it to begin with sorryChat Icon )
My first language is Georgian and I also speak ,read and write in Russian ( but at this point my English is soo much more fluent than my Russian). My DH only speaks English.
So English is the first language in our family and Georgian is second.
I speak to DD in Georgian all day , while my DH is at work, sometimes I also speak to her in Russian. Since DD is part Georgian I would like for her to speak(read and write) fluent Georgian ) and maybe even Russian(at least speak it)
I am hoping that when she is older she will be as interested in foreign languages as her mommy.

My ILs speak Italian to DS and we speak Ital-ish to him....lots of words but not conversations in complete Italian.

He recognizes two Italian Children's songs and so far responds well to his grandparents when they speak to him.
