I want flat abs! help!

No matter how much cardio I do I always, always, always have a little pooch... my lower abs are so weak that ab workouts aren't that effective for me (since my back arches when working on lower abs I wind up straining my muscles more than toning them).... Since I've started with my trainer about 3 months ago, I've gained muscle and lost 8lbs but I still have my little belly! Any suggestions for how to really tighten and firm my abs?? My legs and arms have gotten really defined and toned... and I'm just bummed that my abs aren't making the same progress....

I should also say, that while I eat healthy, I do have my "cheat" days. I will have a slice of pizza or a cookie if I feel like it bc I heard its not good to totally deprive yourself... do I really need to revamp my whole diet for a flat stomach??

Are you eating enough fiber? Fiber helps move things through your digestive system. If you're not really eating enough fiber, then start, but start slowly. If you start eating a lot of fiber right away then you'll be bloated for a while but it is only temporary. According to the May Clinic, if you're under 50 years old then you need 25 grams, over 50 years old-21 grams.

Also, it has been found that bananas MAY help reduce belly bloating and/or fat.

I hope this helps!

Well, I think we all have that one body part that is a real challenge to change, just as we have the body part that is naturally our best. Your abs are your challenge part and may be the last thing on you to improve.

Your back shouldn’t hurt when you do your abs, though. Since you have a trainer, did you ask your trainer about your abs and the pain you had? That’s usually a sign that you’re not doing them 100% correctly.

I absolutely agree that you need to cheat. You know how bad you’re actually cheating, but I don’t think eating a few treats here and there is bad at all.

VERY true! Your back may not be strong enough or you're doing the exercise wrong. Talk with your trainer about this.

Re: I want flat abs! help!

thanks! I did mention it to her. When we work on abs we do a lot of pilates inspired work.... like I'll lay flat and extend my legs straight out about an inch off the floor then pull them so my feet face the ceiling. I'll do a lot of stuff like that and because my back isn't that strong to support the moves, it arches off the floor and causes a lot of strain... so I can't really do the moves as effectively as possible. we're working on strengthening my back... but until then I was wondering if there was something I was missing.

Re: I want flat abs! help!

Pilates always makes a significant impact on my abs - when I'm dedicated, I do it about 3-4 times a week and it makes an amazing transformation within a few weeks
