Rhogam shot..

Someone posted on parenting about the rhogam shot....

I had it at 6 weeks because of some light bleeding, and I will have it again around 28weeks. The poster said it contained mercury and was wondering about the link to autism and other neurological issues. I googled it and read that the mercury was taken out in 2001. My mom had the shot with my siblings and I and we all turned out fine...the more I think about this the more nervous I am getting...

what are your thoughts on this...

Re: Rhogam shot..

not concerned in the least.

what i am concerned about is if i didn't have it and my baby turns out to be positive.

it's a necessary shot and not a big deal to me at all.

Re: Rhogam shot..

(I should preface this post by mentioning that I'm a neuroscientist, so when I became pregnant, I read a lot of manuscripts on autism and other neurological / developmental problems)

While I remain suspicious that the immune response form all those vaccinations MAY contribute to autism... I am completely convinced that thimerisol (that preservative that contains mercury) did NOT contribute towards autism or ADHD at all.....

the research showing it is not involved is overwhelming... so don't worry Chat Icon

I also had the shot at 6 weeks and will again at 28. I don't believe that this shot has anything to do w/ autism, only because there are way more autistic children then people who need these shots. It's a necessary shot for us.

Re: Rhogam shot..

I had it at 28 weeks or so - and then right after delivery (DD was positive). No big deal.

I wouldn't worry. I've had Rhogham 2x already and will likely have it one more time before/at delivery. I was a little concerned at first for the same reasons as you, but then I realized rhogham has been used successfully for many years (over 25yrs) - if their were a correlation between its use and a poor health outcome it probably would've been detected by now. Also, most dr's use
thimerisol - free versions anyway. Hope this helps.

Re: Rhogam shot..

I'm trying not to worry about this, as I also need the shot. It's been used for many years and the majority of the women in my family have had to have it and everything has been fine. It's critical that we get it, and think the positives outweigh the risk.
