Girls who teach in LI
How did you get started? I have been applying all over for months with NO REPLY!!!! I have applied online and sent hard copies of my resume and cover letter as well. I am so frustrated. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA>

I was a teaching assistant there for 1 year. t hey offered me a job and i turned it down! (Crazy, i know... but i had gotten a job at a university to pursue another possible career interest as well as get my Masters for free).
in between, i worked in higher education for 3 years and taught for a year in the city.
4 years later, i see they have an opening. i apply...they remembered me, they loved my subsequent experience and other life experience since then and bam, hired.
ETA: they asked me more about my other job, service work, travel, etc. etc. than teaching questions. i think districts are looking more than the generic Masters in Ed. from a school on LI. my district loved that i was well-traveled, had done substantial service work, etc. etc. what makes YOU different... that's what they're looking for...that want something unique.

My Masters is in Technology. Hopefully that will get me somewhere. I am certified in Elem Ed and Early Childhood. I am not asking for a job 5 miles away but anything closer would be great!

I'm getting really nervous. There is absolutely no way I could commute for that many hours a day. Not to mention the fact that I deal with so much crap at work with no support. If I loved my school I don't think I would mind the commute half as much.

I started teaching in a pre-school for 3 years, then decided that I needed to move on...it was a great stepping stone, but not something I wanted to do forever. I decided to take a risk and become a permanent sub. I wound up getting a leave replacement for that year, then I became a permanent sub in another district and became a leave replacement again. I was a offered a permanent position at the end of that school year, and have been there ever since. It was a long road, but I learned alot and gained alot of experience.

Hey if you don't mind me asking: what did you do in higher ed. I worked in higher ed for two years as an admin assistant but really I was the advisor without the title. I liked higher ed a lot but it seems like there waere not many opportunities to grow and the pay was not good. Do you agree or maybe it was the school that I was in?

Before I graduated I sent resumes to every single school district on Long Island. No joke. My college roomate and I went crazy with sending them out!!!  I wound up getting a ton of calls that way.
This was back in '99 though.

I started as a leave replacement at the beginning of a school year. This however, was 7 years ago. Once the leave was up and there was a position available and I got it.
I think it was somewhat easier a few years ago to find a job. I was hired when a bunch of people were hired in my district due to an influx of retirements.
This year in my school (a high school) we have no retirements and in the entire district I believe we have 4 people retiring. Quite different than it was a few years ago.

Hey I did that in '99, too!
I sent to about 75 districts plus catholic schools! Had 14 interveiws before I got my job in August! One of the most stressful times of my life.
Good luck! Get your resume out there. It can just be getting it to the right school at the right time!

worked my way up...subbed, permanent subbed, TAed and then started getting leave replacements which led to permanent jobs.
my current job is 45 minutes away which stinks, but i would never give it up as it's in a great district and jobs are so hard to come by. in fact, we're excessing all our leave replacements and possibly some tenure track teachers. so i deal with the negatives knowing that the positive is that i have a stable job.
oh...don't know if it helps, but my district loves people who come from teaching in the city due to the whole teacher's college connection. they expect candidates to have dual certification and should have taught for several years first.

Yep me too. I perused NY Times EVERY SINGLE Sunday (this was before OLAS and online application) and sent all the time. I was hired for the 99-00 school year and now i think its even harder unfortunately

I taught in the City for a number of years and by June of last year I had had enough. I applied for 3 jobs in LI that month, and got called by all 3 for interviews. They went well, and now I'm working in LI. It all happened really fast.
What I'm saying is, it's not too late for next year, not by a longshot. You never know who's retiring, who's getting pregnant, who's moving, changing careers, etc... even as late as June (or later!) plenty of stuff opens up. Keep at it and good luck!

I student taught in my building and had a really great relationship with my cooperating teacher. The month that I graduated, my cooperating teacher had to go out for surgery, so I got her leave because I knew the students. Then they needed a leave replacement for the permanent sub, and then the library teacher went on leave, etc. However, approaching 4 years and no permanent position.... and  and  and cause I know what you're going through!

I worked in student affairs, specifically residence life. My first job was a resident director (I ran a freshman residence hall- spervised RAs, conducted judicial hearings, planned some programs, on-call duty, etc. This was technically a part-time job, but i lived in, so it was 24-7. they paid for my masters though and my housing.
I then moved up to an Area Coordinator in residewnce life at a different university. similar job to what i had, but a much larger RA staff and i had 4 residence halls under me.
Pay was lower than teaching, but they provided housing,meal plan and benefits. also, all my utilities, cell phone, etc. I left because i was tured of living in. there is room for advancement depending on what area... ideally, i was thinking of being a Dean of students.
Both my jobs were at well-known Catholic, Jesuit universities.

I was a TA for a year in a half in a very good district.
I then took a .4 teaching position for a half of year in another district. I was then a leave replacement for a half of a year and an education evaluator for the other half of a year in this district. For a total of one and a half years in this district. I was making the same money I was as a TA, and had to go without health insurance for my DH and myself for this period of time, but it was worth it for us because I was able to get the experience I needed and was able to complete my masters during this time because I wasn't teaching full-time. I was then offered a tenure track position in this district and at the same time was offered one in another district on the same day.
Finally I choose to move to the third district and have gotten tenured and am so happy I moved to this district.
I think it is pure luck, I was at the right place at the right time for all of the jobs I have gotten!!
