Is it likely most cold cuts are fine? Sure. Do I want to be the ONE person who gets the cold cuts from the deli with the not cold enough refrig that subjected it's meats to Listeria? I think that's something we each feel differently on taking chances on. Me personally, I don't like to play with odds and gamble, esp just to eat a sandwich. In regards to what people did years ago, that doesn't console me totally. I wish it did but I just feel the more educated we are, I can't personally ignore what has been deemed harmful, even if rarely harmful. But that's me.

Sometimes science, the FDA, and Drs miss majorly problematic things... other times, they create hysteria with things. I think the listeria thing is very hyped-up.
Europeans have been having babies just fine while chowing down on tons of cold cuts. (then again, european butcher shops are usually more careful with meat handling than the slaughterhouses/supermarkets in the US.... so their meat is much less likely to be mishandled....)
But the thing is this, Listeria isn't from "mishandled" meat. It is from meat that isn't refrigerated at cold enough temps, and Listeria is one of those bacteria that can grow even in a refrigerator. Just clarifying.

I understand your feelings..and you are totally entitled to do as you please...
But it just seems that if you (meaning people in general) were to take every single warning or fact or reference out there...whether it be FDA, or AAP or journals or magazine articles etc to heart, you will never ever relax enough to enjoy things.
I mean not to sound morbid...but that one piece of lettuce out there in some sandwich or taco or even bag of fresh produce COULD have ecoli. Or that scrambled egg at the corner diner COULD give you salmonella. Are the chances high?? Absolutely not. Is it possible? Well anything is possible. It's always going to be some worry, some warning and something else to drive mothers to be NUTS
And just wait till baby is here!! It's BPA, vaccines, organic, formula etc....
Which is why I have decided to trust my instincts with things, relax a bit and try to enjoy. It isn't always easy but it needs to be done for peace of mind!

Personally, I don't think it's necessary to emphasize listeria risks since it's been covered on this board numerous times and everyone on this board already HAS made an educated decision on whether or not to occassionally eat coldcuts....
We have all made our personal decisions, and these informed decisions should be respected....

2nd-Not everyone has been on here long enough to see old posts or thinks to search old threads.
3rd - So why is it ok for others to advocate to the OP to eat that sandwich, but not ok for me to share info from the FDA on the risks and then making a decision?
4th- Don't make it sound like I am writing about Listeria on an unrelated topic, cold cuts are what she asked about and they MAY carry Listeria.
5th - I don't recall telling anyone what to do, and if so, please cut and paste where I said that. If I do recall, I saw people saying TO eat it, whereas I just said what I do and provided factual info from the FDA for pregnant women.
I'm sorry if the FDA guidelines are what some believe to be overboard, but they are facts nonetheless. FDA being overboard is opinion, not fact but as I said all along, you can take the facts or leave them. Sorry if you don't like what I shared, but I provided Mia818 with exactly what she asked for and that was info about turkey/cold cuts. My bad.

I honestly think that people need to rely more upon what doctors tell them than relying on varied random posts from virtual strangers for any medical issue. Relying on internet information scares me on many levels .

I was merely stating my opinion in my original post, and you quoted me and argued the opposite point. so I replied.

You don't sound morbid, but...
and here is the big but...
The reason Listeria is a big issue is because it is one of the ONLY bacteria that can cross the placenta and harm/destroy the fetus...whereas EColi and Salmonella do not cross the placenta and while might make you (the mom) sick, can't harm the baby overall.
That is why their risks are not stressed as much as the risk of Listeria. So big difference.

If you didn't reply to every person's post who made a different decision from yours and aruge against their choice, and instead left your opinion to your original post on this thread, I wouldn't view your posts as argumentative.
education is providing info (such as your original post) and letting others decide for themselves.....
