SO sad...just BF'd DD for the last time and a question about weaning abruptly if anyone can help!

i have a very bad sore throat strep infection-waited too long to get it diagnosed and now have to take really strong anti-biotics so starting right away i have to wean DD-i am just so sad. she is 9 months so i know i gave it a good run. just wanted to do it longer.
anyway, anyone ever have to abruptly wean their DC? any tips or advice? i did not plan on doing it this way and am not only sad but worried! i don't know anything about formula either! TIAChat Icon

Why do you really have to do it abruptly? If you do not want your baby to have the milk can you pump? Cabbage leaves and ice bags do help.

can't they give you a milder antiobiotic maybe just for a longer time so that you can continue nursing.
hope you feel better soon

thank you all-and good questions!
my infection is so bad that the lesser anti-biotics most likely will not get rid of the infection which is on the verge of becoming pneumonia
and yes i could pump which i never really did-but i would have to dump and then wean DD all over again in a few months anyway. i had hoped to wean gradually.
thanks for the replies!Chat Icon

You shouldn't have to wean for a strep infection. Strep usually can be treated by penicillin based antibiotics which are safe for breastfeeding. Actually almost all the antibiotics are safe. I would clarify that issue first before you wean your baby. If it reallty turns out that you shouldn't BF with this med-which I doubt-you could always pump and throw out the milk. I wouldn't recommend weaning abruptly no matter what.

i know....that is good advice too. i asked both the dr. and the pharmacist about this antibiotic and both said no way, too strong for BFing moms. the pharmacist who has 3 DC's was adamant about it. i am going to look it up online and see what they say. i am so confused! Chat Icon
thanks!
looked it up-it's called Avelox and is really for pneumonia and other upper respitory infections also states that nursing infants could be harmed. Chat Icon really don't know what i am going to do! but i have to get better or i can't take care of DD at all!

Re: SO sad...just BF'd DD for the last time and a question about weaning abruptly if anyone can help!

wow i'm so sorry to hear that you are so sick. I think DC will be ok though if you have to switch.. I was in the hospital one night and DH had to give my daughter formula because I had nothing stored and she actually came right back to the breat luckily after but was also fine with the formula. I think it hurts us more then them. I know I was in tears for the one night of her having it because I was afraid that she wouldnt' come back to me. Do you have any breat milk already stored that you can give her until you get better and just pump and throw out for now? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DD so far has come back to me many times, she has had formula and a few bottles of my milk and seems to always come back, thankfully. GOOD LUCK and feel better!!

Re: SO sad...just BF'd DD for the last time and a question about weaning abruptly if anyone can help!

We went to Mexico (w/o DD) for 4 days when DD was 8 months- and she was fine and able to latch when I got back. I pumped and dumped the entire time.

IF you want to continue BFing, I would just pump and dump for the duration of the meds. BUT- if you decide to wean (which is FINE), continue to pump and dump, just do it less and less over the course of a week. You can use cabbage leaves and take Sudafed to help dry up your milk.

Whatever you do, DON'T go cold turkey- you'll wind up engorged and in pain.

Good luck- and FEEL BETTER soon.

Re: SO sad...just BF'd DD for the last time and a question about weaning abruptly if anyone can help!

When DS was 2 wks old I did this b/c I had to take antibiotics. I pumped and dumped for 10 days and gave him formula and then went back to ebf. B/c he was so young and was eating all day long and my supply wasn't established yet I was pumping and feeding him 8-9 times a day - it was exhausting but, I made it through and my supply and DS adjusted to and back fine. However, if he was 9mos at the time i probably would have just stopped. That said, now at 6.5 mos I am trying to slowly wean him by giving him one bottle a day and let me tell you it is not easy - getting him to take the formula and the bottle was really hard at first - but a week later he is doing much better - DD will be fine it might just be a difficult adjustment for you Chat Icon Chat Icon

You're right about the antibiotic. I guess your doctor must have his/her reasons to pick something not compatible with BF. Pumping and dumping is still a good option. Even if you decide to wean, try pumping for a few days-fewer sessions each day to make it easier.

I hope it works for you Chat Icon

After you've finished your medication- if you still want (or need )to wean here is some info from kellymom: weaning from the pump

As long as you aren't on the medication, you can also offer her the EBM in a bottle so that it doesn't go to waist.

But I hope she comes back to you Chat Icon

Feel better soon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

to wean - you can pump once less for a couple of days. So, pump 5 times 1 day, and than 4 times.. and that will slowly diminish your milk.

If you really don't want to give up BF, you can pump and dump until 10 days are up and than continue breastfeeding. That way you wouldn't feel like you missed out on anything.

Great advice! ITA

Just wanted if you go cold turkey, you could also wind up with masitis, which is the last thing you'd want to battle while dealing with strep, etc. Although maybe the antibiotics would prevent it? Anyway I wouldn't chance it.

Re: SO sad...just BF'd DD for the last time and a question about weaning abruptly if anyone can help!

I know how you feel!! I was in your exact postion. My dd was 7 mo. I had to go on a strong antibiotic for 10 days. I felt so bad!!

I did not have much bm in storage. I had to abruptly stop bf my dd. I switched her to formula. She transitioned really well!! I pumped and dumped for 10 days and found pumping to be easier then orginal thought. I was proud of myself to be able to pump for that period of time.

I want you to know it is possible to pump and dump while on one course of antibiotics, I did it! I just had to go on a second round of antibiotics when my supply started dimishing. At that point, I never went back to bf. If you have to wean at this point, I hope your dd transitions as well as mine did.

Good luck to you!!!

Pump a couple of times a day and dump it. Then lower the amount of times you pump. When you stop, take regular Sudafed, it will help dry up your supply.
