Grrr. Who's insurance?

Soooo, DH got extremely drunk last night and when he was parking his truck, he backed into my car. The hitch on the back dented my hood slightly. It's minor, but will prob need a new hood. I honestly could live with it, but I want to trade the car in at some point for a new car, so I guess i should get it fixed. I have had 2 accidents through my insurance in a not so long period of time (3 years). One was my fault (rear ended someone) and the other was a hit and run in front of my house. I'm still on my father's insurance tho, so I'm worried that if I put this through, they will drop us which would mean my father and sister would lose their insurance as well. On the other hand, DH has Geico and they have a rep for dropping you after one incident. What should I do?

I wouldn't go through insurance at all. Just pay out of pocket...

Better get out your flame retardant suit! I would not make a claim-ask friends for a reasonable body shop

I kind of agree, although I can tell you that I have Geico & DH has had an accident and they never threatened to drop us.

ETA: and forgive me but I cannot keep quiet. DH should learn that a consequence of his behaviour is fixing your car.Chat Icon

Re: Grrr. Who's insurance?

it depends how often insurance companies run your records.

Geico apparently never ran ours and finally did, now they dropped us after 5 incidents.

It costs more to run these reports than it did before so some insurers are not running them as often.

I still would not go through insurance.

If your husband was driving while he was drunk, I think your problems are bigger than a dented hood.

Re: Grrr. Who's insurance?

That damage doesn't sound bad enough for insurance. I'd pay out of pocket.

Regardless, BOTH of your insurance companies would be notified about the claim if you make one...

I'm so sorry. Chat Icon

PLEASE - try to get through to him. The dented hood and insurance aren't nearly as important and guaranteeing that this NEVER happens again - EVER.

wow - so sorry Chat Icon
I would be so upset if the man ever did that...

but anyway, i agree - don't put it through your insurance. Take it to a reputable shop (I can recommend one in Smithtown if you're close) - they can probably bang out the dent and paint it with touch up paint and it'll look pretty good.

ITA

Just pay it and be glad the bumper is the only casualty.

I'm sorry but nothing makes me more sick thank drunk drivers.

Re: Grrr. Who's insurance?

As your car was hit while parked, you bear no liability. You could use your own insurance, and your company would subrogate against his company. Sometimes, though, there are exclusions for damage that happens on your property between your vehicles (depends upon your policy).

IMO, I don't think it's worth it to go through insurance. The damage might not even be higher than your deductible.

I can't get past this. That is extremely disturbing. Like the other ladies said, there might be more important issues other than a dented hood.
