LIJ and C-sections

Hello all. I am new to this and was wondering if anyone can help me. I am delivering in LIJ and heard that they have like 50% c-section rate! I don't have any indicators as of yet for needing one, but I am afraid they will still give me one for convenience/insurance, whatever else reason. In addition, my OB-GYN is on the conservative side, so I am afraid that at the first side of trouble she'll just cut me open. Anyone had experiences with LIJ as far as vaginal delivery? And if you had a c-section there, I would welcome your comments as well, since I need to know the reasons they gave you for the procedure. My OB-GYN is Altman-Neumann of New Hyde Park, if anyone had her, please comment as well.

I delivered at LIJ but I didnt use the same doctor that you have. I had a vaginal delivery. I pushed for 2 hours and I really thought that they were going to tell me that I needed a C Section but they didnt even mention it. I would think that they would rather a vaginal delivery because its less time in the hospital. I would talk to your doctor and tell her your concerns. Overall, my experience at LIJ was good..the only thing that I didnt like was being in a room with 4 people. Other than that, the staff was very nice and accomodating.

my sister had baby #3 at LIJ a month ago
she had C-section #3 and MOST of the women who had babies when she did had c-sections

You have to consent to the surgery unless, I believe, the baby is in immediate distress. Make your wishes VERY clear! Let them know a c-section is a LAST resort. Good Luck

acutally my mom is an ob nurse and long island as a whole has a 50% c -section rate. It is a sad sad thing. And the doctors give reasons to scare patients into them. OF COURSE there are some reasons that make sense.. Please do not flame me...but a lot of dr.'s want you on a time schedule

There are things you can do to aviod an unecessary section. Don't go to the hospital until you are 2 to 3 minutes apart and can't talk. This will allow you walk around. Lying prone strapped to a monitor will.
Don't take an epidural at all or until the last possible time you can (that one is tough to do...lol).
Don't get induced unless you need to because of a medical problem. Women can safely go two weeks past delivery in most cases.
The best thing you can do is find a doctor or midwife that has a low section rate and is supportive of letting women's bodies do what they are supposed to do. A midwife is the best way to get this opinion. Good luck. There are a lot of websites and books out there that will explain this a lot better than I did. Pushedbirth.com is one one of them

I gave birth at LIJ and three of my friends have as well and we all had vaginal deliveries. I think (or would hope) that it depends on your individual situation.

I agree 100% with what you said. I tried everything to avoid a c-section with my DD, but I was young & got railroaded into one anyway. They claim that it was because I was in labor too long & it could cause distress (except my DD was fine...), but really, they just didn't want to wait any longer. It's sad. Really sad. Next time around I will be going with a midwife & doing some things differently.
