Is this tacky????

Here is an email I just sent to family and very close friends. After I hit "send" I started to rethink this. I am so confused. I hate that all of these toys being recalled had me resort to sending this email. I am so confused. What do you think? I just DO NOT want Grace to be hurt in any way by a toy that someone gives her as a gift, KWIM? Anyway, here's the email. Please be honest with out flaming. Thanks!

Hi Family and Friends,

Some of you have been asking me what should you get Grace for
Christmas. Normally I think it is tacky to send out a "wish list"
because whatever she receives as a gift she usually loves, but in this
case I felt it necessary.

I am sure all of you have heard on the news lately about recalled toys
from China for lead paint and chemicals in toys that are very harmful
to children and have even caused death in a few children. Therefore,
I am sending out this link "500 toys not made in China". Anything
that is for a girl and is age appropriate off of this list, would be
great for Grace as a Christmas gift.

Please DO NOT feel like you need to get Grace something just because I
sent you this email; I just want all of you to be informed. I was not
sure how to word this, so please forgive me if I offend any of you
that is not my intention. Also, please forward this link to anyone
else you know who has children. Thank you for understanding.

At first, before I read the letter, I thought it might be. Then I read the letter. I think it was very informative. And, it shows how much your care for your daughter and her safety. If your family and friends don't like that then it's their problem. Chat Icon

I don't think it was tacky at all. Plus, they ARE your close friends and family, so I'm sure they know exactly where you're coming from.

Re: Is this tacky????

No I think its perfect, its not like you made a list or a registry of what you want your family to get Grace, that would be tacky, you were just giving them some important info about certain toys that could be harmful.

Re: Is this tacky????

A little. I would have accepted the gift and then taken it back to the store or made up an excuse.

If you did not know where they purchased it, would you throw it out? I am just curious as to how you would handle it.

Re: Is this tacky????

So, the poll is basically split. For those who said "yes" it is tacky, if I was to write another email how would you suggest I word it? Tell the family and friends I sent it to to ignore the last email? I just don't know what to do here.

Re: Is this tacky????

I don't necessarily think it's tacky, just unnecessary. I can't imagine there is a single person who has not seen on the news or read in the paper about all of the toy recalls. If it was already recalled, they won't be able to buy it. If it was not recalled....well, it's your responsibility as the parent to choose to let your child keep the the gift or not, not the responsibility of the gift giver.

Since the email was already sent I would just leave it alone and not send a follow up. I'm sure people won't give it nearly as much thought as you are...they'll either get one of those gifts or something else. No harm.

Thank you. I am giving it a lot of thought because I do not want to offend anyone.

Just to clarify, I sent this out to aunts, uncles, grandparents and few close friends of mine who we exchange with their kids. Plus, most of them asked me what to get for her. I am not going to give it any more thought. Thanks everyone for your feedback. Chat Icon

I think it is fine. You are only sending it to people who love your daughter. If I got something like this from my sister I wouldn't think twice. I would want to buy the safest toys for my niece.Chat Icon

I don't think it's tacky at all. You worded it very well and explained that you are very concerned with the recalls and if anyone is planning to get a gift, to help them out, you have a resource they can use. I would appreciate that as a family member who wanted to get your daughter a gift.

I think it is very well written.

I would like to send something similar -- except NOBODY has asked me anything about Alex's first Christmas!! We aren't expecting much - despite the fact that we have been buyin gifts for 22 nieces and nephews for years......for every occasion....

No...I don't think it is tacky because the people you sent it to probably know where you are coming from.

Re: Is this tacky????

No. Since people have been asking what to get her - this is your response. It's informative for the folks that don't realize the extent of the toy recalls.

I think we're super aware of it b/c we're all parents. My 80 year old grandmother might not be aware of it, or my aunt whose children are all in college.
I don't think it was tacky. It was worded very nicely. Its better than my SILs email asking us if we wanted the kids acct #s so we could put money directly in their account. Chat Icon

And thanks for that link, BTW

This is exactly why I sent it. Plus, I have friends who do not have children.

Actually two of my friends and one of Grace's Aunts emailed me thanking me for the email, which made me feel better about sending it.

I think it was written with a lot of thought & concern.

If I were to get that email, I would appreciate it. I think we all are concerned over the toys we buy or have bought both for our children & our friends' children. While we're aware of the recalls, I don't have a list of recalls with me while I go shopping. This is just the list I'd want.
