Don't want to start a debate, just some info for parents of young infants
I work in a hospital and we have recently had a visit from DOH about an outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) that is going around in children. Its not rampant, I think there has been something like 18 cases in 2007, with 8 cases confirmed in the past 2 months. All of the cases were children, and of those almost all of them were children under 6 months of age. All children had no known contacts of people with this disease and, all were not vaccinated.
I am not trying to start a debate here, but this is the reason why they do not recommend delaying vaccines too long. They get some of them at 2 months because they are vulnerable to these diseases if they are not vaccinated. Waiting until they are 6 months-1 year or later in some cases is missing the window so to speak.
BTW, adults infected with pertussis usually show cold symptoms and do not typically have the "whooping cough" sound that children do. It would be almost impossible to determine a sick adult with pertussis from someone with a common cold. With tons of immigrants and non-vaccinated individuals around there is a chance for kids to get this, its not eradicated.
I hope this does not offend anyone, or start a debate, its just info. Every parent has the right to make decisions about thier children, but I hope they are making these decisions informed.

I had whopping cough as a child and I can atest to how HORRIBLE it was and my mom to how scary it was.

This is exactly the reason we did not delay or break up the shots. Exposure risk is high being that we live in a very densely populated area. The last thing I want to see is my infant suffering from something that could've been prevented.

Another reason children should be vaccinated as soon as possible...the benefits of strengthening childrens immune systems at an early age far outweigh the risks. Not only are you helping your own child..you are helping all the other kids he/she comes into contact with.
I always see news about infant mortality rates around the world and what do they always have in common?? Lack of childhood vaccines against diseases we all take for granted because the US eradicated them many years ago.

There's actually been a full page ad in Parenting magazine the past few months recommending that moms get the vaccine also to prevent transmission to baby...
Once Kristina is here, I plan on getting the vaccination...

totally agree with all the AP. in just my few months of doing pediatrics ( i am a doctor but not a pediatrician) i saw a lot of funky stuff, including measles, rubella, and pertussis. all were in children who had not been vaccinated.
these cases don't make the newspapers or magazines but they are out there. and these are dangerous, potentially lethal diseases.it's scary to think that we will be seeing more of them in the future as people choose against vaccinating their children... jmo.

ITA! The benefits far outweigh the risks and i wish that these type of occurences were made known to everyone cause too many of us forget, or ill-informed or never lived through these type of illnesses we vaccinate our kids against that many many kids die everyday from around the world.
These a reason for these vaccines and a reason they are given so early

I'm a selective vaxer, so I'll weigh in. Whooping cough was a shot I thought was important and gave my son at an early age. It only makes sense to give it at an early age since that's when it is dangerous. I agree the outbreak should be publicized, so people are aware of it -- both vaxed and unvaxed children are at risk (vaxing does not ensure immunity) so parents should know what symptoms to look for..
I do caution against making sweeping genrealizations about vaccines or people who choose to give or not give them. Yes there are some scarey diseases we have vaccines for, but not all of our vaccines are for scarey diseases (mumps and rubella, for example are harmless to infants). No vaccine is 100% safe (3 have been pulled from the market) and there is a serious lack of long-term studies on the effects of vaccines and the chemicals they are comprised of. Maybe that matters to you, maybe not -- that's your decision. But it may give you some insight as to why some people are leery of vaccines.

Parents have the right to make decisions about thier own child and I am trying not to generalize, I respect your opinion, but hear me out for one second.
If a vaccine is very new to the market, I think I would wait and see before giving it, but I personally don't believe that the vaccines are the cause of autism.
Any medication can cause serious effects rarely, including aspirin, tylenol, antibiotics, and now cough medicines. Everything has risk, and its also risky to without all meds as well. Its a choice the parent has to make on his/her own.
Rubella may not be as life threatening to children, but it can be fatal to unborn children. Lets say that your child develops the disease because he/she was not vaccinated and then in turn infects a pregnant woman who has not been vaccinated or no longer has immunity for some reason, this could cause serious birth defects or stillbirth to her child. This is a highly contageous disease and it can be transmitted fairly easily.
I had to be reimmunized for rubella a few years ago because my titer was negative even though I had all my shots. You never know who is immune or who isnt. If I didnt have titers drawn for work, I would have never known I was no longer immune. The same goes for chicken pox, could cause birth defects/miscarraige when pregnant women are exposed. That is why I feel that children should be vaccinated. I'm not attacking any parents here, that is not my intention, but its just an example of how a seemingly "harmless" disease IMO isn't so harmless after all.

Valerie -- I absolutely agree with your point about public health benefit and I do intend to have my child vaxed for rublella (just not on the front loaded CDC schedule). My concern is that there have been no studies that show it is safe to inject the amounts of aluminum and other chemicals that are in the vaxes into infants -- it gives me cause to pause and I don't want my son to be the guinea pig.
I think it would be a good public health campaign to remind women of the risks of rubella and chickenpox to a fetus and have titer testing done regularly at annual OB exams.
