Girls with GD?

were any of you put on medication? what is the name of the medication? i wanted to look it up. my perinatal doc is giving me one week with another modified diet otherwise he wants me to start taking medicine because my fasting a..m # has been a little high? He wants me to add a protein bedtime snack. I dont eat bedtime snacks now yet my weight is still going up. I don't want to take any med - what if it has side effects for the baby? :huggy

This is making me crazy and depressed Chat Icon

Re: Girls with GD?

I'm on insulin....it actually sounds worse than it is. My endocronologist will not put me on any other pill for the diabetes because he said that there have not been enough studies done on pregnant women using the pill for GD. I have to take 4 insulin shots a day. They don't hurt at all. Hopefully you will not need any medicationChat Icon

Re: Girls with GD?

I'm in the exact same situation as you are right now. I freaked this morning b/c i just can't take it anymore with the poking finger and the nightly lovenox shots. Now that I've calmed I am going to let the week go by and see what my numbers are. I won't worry about it until I have to. Hang in there...FM if you need to chat!Chat Icon

Re: Girls with GD?

I don't have GD but my close friend did when she was PG. She found that eating no carbs at breakfast helped her AM numbers

i'm not an OB, but as far as i know, insulin is used in pregnancy if you need a little help with glucose control. this has been done FOREVER, and i wouldn't worry about any harm being done to the baby.

this, too, will pass. your baby will be just fine.

by the way, as due date twins, i think we need to start an official countdown to our due date!!!!! 68 DAYS!!!!!

OMG 68 days!!! I can't wait. I am concerened about the pill. i know insulin shots are common but i don't want to take any new drugs. The prob is its not my "after breakfast-meals" # that's off - it is my PRE-breakfast # that is high. which means my body/liver is producing too much of something.

he's going to let me try adding a protein right before bed to see if it brings it down overnight Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Girls with GD?

You may be surprised at what that night time snack can do. So far, it's kept my fasting numbers in check (fingers crossed that it continues).

My nutritionist suggested that I eat the following: (I usually eat this around 10/10:30pm and then test just before 8am)

- 1 serving of cereal that would equal less than 30g carbs (I have found Special K w/berries to be quite filling and a little "sweet" which curbs the sugar cravings)
- 1/2 cup milk
- 6 almonds
- 1 string cheese

But basically, she told me 2 carbs, 1 protein, 1 fat and 1/2 cup milk for the night snack.

Somedays I'm really not that hungry, but I force myself to eat the night snack so I'm ok in the morning. So far, so good.

Hopefully a little protein at bedtime may be just what you need to avoid the medicine!

Good luck and keep us posted!
