Hmm...most interesting. Do you know where in Oahu your sister lived? Was it far from Honolulu? I'm just curious if most of the people that live in/around Honolulu are "implants" and those on the outer edges of the island are natives for the most part....??

I forget exactly where she was in Oahu (It was 8 years ago). I'll ask her.

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....

my sister lived in Kailua for 3 years which is on Oahu and loved it

I spent the summer with her
and then went back again

Maui was nice but may be too quiet

Kailua was quiet too but it was on Oahu so there was a little bit more interaction

I wouldn't recommend Waikkiki - Kailua was on the opposite side of the island. Her beach was in walking distance to her apt and it is always on the top ten beautiful beaches list. It is gorgeous there, kind of like a hidden gem b/c most people stay in Waikikki

FM if you want more info

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....

My cousin lived on Oahu for a few years and didn't like it at all. While it was nice to have the beaches and activities and the beauty of HI she couldn't stand many things. Since her husband was in the Navy they were able to shop on the base but everything was very expensive. Plus, it was a nightmare trying to have stores ship items to her...some don't ship there and those that do often charge a lot of $, plus the shipping time is longer. The schools weren't very good, IMO, and she sent them to private. I wasn't pleased with the special education services her neighbor's child was getting either (I'm in the field). It was costly to come back and visit family on the east coast or for us to visit her. She felt very limited by the number of stores there and eventually got "island fever". There are parts of her that miss some aspects of it and I think she's glad she had the experience but she can only say that now that she's back on the mainland.

Does Oahu have areas in which the beaches and scenery are "away" from the stresses of the city? But still beautiful and relaxing?

We went to Oahu last month and due to hotel problems, stayed in three different parts of the island -- Ko Olina, Waikiki and the North Shore.

I would move there in a heartbeat, if I had the opportunity. Chat Icon I'm keeping the Aloha spirit alive with my avatar. Chat Icon

The traffic is awful. Waikiki and the area between Waikiki and the H1 highway could be the worst traffic I've ever been in. Ever.

There's a lot of poverty and homelessness -- some of it by choice because the cost of living is really high. I read an article on it in the paper while I was there.

Some of the LOSTies live in Kaliua (sp?), which is across the island from Honolulu.

The North Shore was pretty, but not practical to commute to Honolulu because of the traffic.

Again, I would move there in a heartbeat. Chat Icon

Can you take a vacation and see for yourself before deciding?

oahu because there is a city life and you could always go and visit the other islands. Second choice would be maui. I could not live in Kuaui, too quiet

Wow - what an incredible opportunity - I'm jealous!!

Me too...and my vote is for Maui....but if you like action as a police officer you would want Oahu

ETA...Maybe you could live on an island of your choice...alot of people commute to Oahu from neighboring islands...only about 30min on a hopper plane

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....

Either Kaui or Maui.
Kaui, because it is very secluded with not many people living on that island. It is such a lush island, but it is very secluded and I could see someone becoming board on this island, after sometime.
Maui, Alot more to do on this island, and alot more popluation, but it is still a beautiful hawaiian island, where you would have plenty of time to relax.

Oahu, was too much tourism, and alot of crime. Haven't you see Dog Bounty hunter show?Chat Icon Plus what ever island you choose, for $100 you can fly to another island.

Houses are very expensive, like $800,000 for a small three bedroom house.

MAUI!!!

Relaxed but still has civilization. Beautiful island.

Oahu is too busy and the Big Island still has a volcano on it.

I haven't been to Kaui but I think it may be too relaxed.

Re: If you've been to Hawaii and had an opportunity to live there....

Wow! I can't thank ALL of you ladies enough! You've helped me tremendously! Of course, I still have many different options to weigh and a few months to think about them all.

I do plan a small visit out there before I accept any job offers....I am definitely a spontaneous, fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kinda girl---but not THAT bad!!! :) I'll only need 2-3 days to decide whether I like it or not when I get there. I'll spend a bit of time on both islands and see what happens.

Again....thank you all SO VERY MUCH!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Can I just say how jealous I am!
I went to Oahu and Kauai on my honeymoon and wanted so badly to stay in Kauai. It is definitley very quiet there but thats what I loved about it. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the islands though. Can you get me a job too? Chat Icon

I've been to Kauai and Maui...it would be very hard for me to say which one I liked better. However, to live...I think I would go with Maui. But def. spend at least a week a year on Kauai for vacation. Chat Icon Good luck with whatever you choose!
