Does anyone watch (or tried to watch) older TV shows from your youth with your kids? I'm talking sitcoms and such, like Full House, Friends, Brady Bunch, M*A*S*H*, etc. (Cartoons don't count, lol.)

What did DCs like/dislike? How did you handle dated references or mature content?

My 7 year old likes to watch Friends & Everybody Loves Raymond, lol. It is usually on a non school night when he is up past his 8:30 bedtime and sits with us to watch it. I find that most of the mature content goes over his head.

We watch the black and white Twilight Zone show with 12yo DD. We also watch Married With Children with her.

We explain a lot of the dated material and mature content very straight forward and exactly what it is.

This makes me laugh because when I was a kid on Sunday nights my family would watch America’s Most Wanted and then I would go to bed. Talk about inappropriate for a kid. What the hell were my parents thinking?!?!?Chat Icon No wonder I was exhausted on Monday mornings (who could sleep after that show?).

My son watched Full House and Fresh Prince on his own from Nick @ nite.

I did watch the original TNMNT with him.

I would love to watch Different Strokes with him.

These are all great answers! Would anyone here be interested in being interviewed for Newsday about this?

Re: Sharing Older TV Shows with Kids

So far my kids watch mostly kiddie shows still, but they do love Saved by the Bell... and I will definitely be showing them Full House, Brady Bunch, Growing Pains, I Love Lucy, Three's Company... etc. on DVD. They just don't make shows like those anymore!!!!

And I too was obsessed with Unsolved Mysteries & Rescue 911 as a kid... no wonder I was terrified & couldn't stay asleep through the night as a kid!!

I used to watch soap operas with my grandmother when i was really young (and she would ask me to translate for her bc she didnt speak English lol). In fact, some of my best memories are all of us either in the living room or my parents bedroom watching Dynasty, Dallas and Falcoln Crest ... =)
