Mold in rental :(((((((
Does anyone know the process of mold removal in a rental and renters rights?
We just found a ton of mold all inside both large sky lights that are over our living room and dining room. Takes up a pretty large portion of the living space and I'm freaking out having two young children probably breathing this stuff in.
Now that we found the mold, we took lots of pictures. It's from obvious water damage and looks like previous mold was there bc it's bubbled under the taping and sheet rock.
The landlord was pretty lax saying he may just wait until the spring to repair but this is mold and obvious water damage lingering above our heads. My husband said he wants it addressed now so he's sending his contractor over to take a look.
We always owned a home and this is our first time renting.
What are our rights as tenants?
Do I have to get the mold tested or is it mandatory the landlord does this?
It's a very large area over our heads in our main living area so I'm assuming we won't be able to stay here when it's removed. Is he required to supply us with a place to live?
Our lease is due to be renewed now but we are not signing it due to this. Would you just leave and find a new rental being that you are not locked into a current lease?
I'm seriously freaking over this because I have a 1 year old and a 9 year old who is highly allergic to mold. I don't know what to do :(

you absolutely have rights and the land lord cannot just wait until the spring to clear this up. Your rights are determined by state, county, and town law. So you would need to look up the laws in the place you live to determine exactly what your rights are. I personally would want to move, but you would have to speak with your land lord and see what your lease says.

Personally, I would move asap. I had a small amount of mold in the bathroom on dark blue wallpaper above the shower, that I got so sick I could barely leave the house or do much besides sleep. I also became allergic to all but around 20 foods, and am slowly gaining some back now. It has been a nightmare. Start giving everyone in the household binders (activated charcoal) daily to remove the mold in your bodies and Epsom salt baths daily. Good luck.

Also, EVERYTHING in your home, at least that room, is now contaminated. I would get a Germ Guardian air purifier (UV-C to kill mold) and sanitize everything if you move or once it's remediated. I have been cleaning and sanitizing since Chriatmas when we discovered the mold and ripped out the Sheetrock. Hydrogen peroxide 3% is what I've been using, and also a steam cleaner. Find somewhere else to stay, mold can destroy your life.
