? For elementary school teachers. What would you do?

A question for teachers:

What would you do or what is the norm in this situation.

You are in your classroom at 8am, one of your students comes in and says "I'm here for extra help". Your extra help days are actually Wednesday and Friday, so clearly the mother was confused.

Do you help the student?
Send her to wait in the lobby for school to start in 20 minutes?

- I made this mistake with my 3rd grader today. The teacher told her that extra help was "by invitation only" and sent my daughter back to the lobby to wait. She had no students in the classroom.

If I'm there anyway yeah I would help her. Why not
But I always give up prep times for things like that

Eta im probably not the norm. I'm the one who's months behind on my paperwork amd flies by the seat of my pants
I'm also not a classroom teacher
Maybe I shouldn't have responded at all- sorry

I get to school early and usually have a set list of things I need to complete that morning in order to prepare for my day. While I would feel bad turning a student away, some mornings would not be possible to provide extra help on an unscheduled day.

to be fair to that teacher, she probably goes in early to plan for the day and get her lessons all ready to go. I make appts for extra help with my students in the mornings, because i usually use that time to get my things together for the day. I need to know ahead of time if they will be coming for extra help, so that I can get to school earlier and get my work done beforehand

Re: ? For elementary school teachers. What would you do?

I teach in NYC schools and the administration can come in at any time to observe you and it counts toward an observation. So, I need to make sure I have charts, copies, and my Smartboard lessons ready. I go to school early so I have more time at home with my kids. So if a child came up early and I had something to do, I would let them read or I would try to help them while I was getting things ready. I would not be able to tutor them though.

I would try to fit her in, BUT often if I can make it in extra early I'm busy prepping, grading, or even taking a a minute for myself to get ready for the day.
Personally I enjoy the 20 minutes before school starts because it's quiet, and I can think and plan for my day mentally. It's my calm before the storm, so to speak.
I'd feel bad turning kids away, but I most likely would. I'd also make sure to tell her when tutoring time was and try and remind her, so that she didn't feel slighted or ignored.

I would not be able to keep her in my room unless I had all my stuff taken care of for the day. I would feel bad sending her away but my time is very limited and structured in the classroom. Every minute is so valuable. I would not be able to offer extra help if I did not plan for it during my morning routine.

I would send her to the lobby to wait. There is a reason extra help is Wednesday and Friday. It's probably because on the other days the teacher is trying to get their work ready for the lessons for the week. Every minute at school is precious when trying to prepare lessons so even 20 minutes would matter.

If she wasn't expecting to help any students that morning, then most likely she was very busy prepping for the day. There is so much that goes in to running a classroom, and getting everything ready for each lesson. On the days she offers tutoring, I'm sure she makes sure all that stuff is prepared the night before. But if it's a day she's not offering tutoring, that's her time to get her work done. Also, often teachers have faculty meetings and other responsibilities in the mornings, like bus duty, grade level planning, parent conferences, phone calls and emails to parents...the list of responsibilities that often need to be squeezed in before the school day begins is endless. So, it's very understandable to me why she wasn't able to help your dd on the wrong morning.

I may not give extra help, but I would never send her to the lobby. Couldn't she just read or draw quietly in the room?

The teacher may have wanted to leave the room at some point. If that is the case, she can't leave the child in the room alone.

My son told me he had extra help on a day he didn't. I waited outside just in case. When he got to the classroom his teacher told him to stay because he was already there. Another kid came by mistake too. She gave them some worksheets to do.

I agree with this BUT if it were me I would have worked with her for the twenty minutes that day and simply sent a note with her to give to the parent -- or emailed -- whatever, just explaining that it was obviously a mix up, so for one time no big deal and I helped her this time but in the future, please note that the days are XYZ. Thanks so much for understanding.

Done. That way, you clear it up for the future but you help the girl now since she didn't know and the mom obviously made a mistake, which happens to everyone.

If she wasn't expecting kids that day I am sure she was busy with things that she could not just drop and help the student for twenty minutes. I would have sent the kid to the lobby too. If I am in early it's to do my own work or for a pre-scheduled meeting. I wouldn't have the time to sit with one child for 20 minutes.

Exactly. If she needed that 20 min to prep for the day, what was she supposed to do? She can't start her lessons unprepared, or without her materials organzied. Or like I said before, she may have had a meeting to attend, or maybe she just wanted to eat her breakfast in the only few moments of peace she would have for the rest of the day. If she HAD let your daughter stay, it would have been very nice of her. But I don't see how she should have been obligated to at all. She's a teacher, not a babysitter. The lobby was a safe place for your daughter to wait.

I am not a teacher, but a parent of a child with significant learning delays who receives quite a lot of extra help

I would not have expected the teacher to work the child, and would have had to send them to the office, or wherever they can wait until they are allowed in the classroom.

I am a parent, and human, but if it was my mistake then I can't expect the teacher to change her day for my one child.

I teach 3rd grade and I would send her to the lobby as well. When I come in the morning, I have a lot to do to get ready for the day, so I really don't have time to sit and help a student.

Although I would feel bad doing this, I have to agree. Every minute counts in elementary especially. I use that time to plan, check emails, organize papers, make copies, call parents, do paperwork, etc. etc.

"By invitation only"???? Sounds very strange and although I did use to appreciate my prep periods, I'd definitely feel bad if a student came to ask for help and I just leave her hanging. Pretty rude teacher!!!

What if she had a meeting? There is a good chance she could not meet with the student because of a prior commitment. A situation like this is not that black and due to the nature of a teachers job. Most of the before school/after school time is structured.

I was a teacher as well, I think the best thing would have been informing the parent the reason why she couldn't help the kid (if she had a commitment that she couldn't cancel, like a meeting), but it seems that this didn't happen so we're just assuming what the reasons were. Also I know a teacher's schedule is tight but u really don't have students showing up randomly to the classroom for extra help every time, yes it can be annoying if u had other things u wanted to do, but I'd totally feel bad turning her away, especially an elementary kid. Plus we do have prep periods that we can use to prepare what needs to be done.

She's not a babysitter - it's not really her responsibility to attend to your child when it was her personal time to get ready for the day. I don't mean to sound harsh but the reality is that teachers have a lot of prep and although it was a mistake, they really should not be expected to stop what they are doing.

I'm not a teacher, but I probably would have felt bad and helped them. I'd have a really short lesson and give them a worksheet to quietly work on while I tried to get my prep work done at the same time.
