Interview in Long Island
I've never been to NY, and I have an interview in Stony Brook. I was told that flying into MacArthur and renting a car would be the way to go, but then I see other people saying you shouldn't rent a car in NY. Although my interview is on Long Island, I wouldn't mind going into the city to take a look around. I'll only be there for 2 days. Any advice? I will appreciate all suggestions.

Driving from Mc Arthur to Stony Brook is very easy - definitely the way to go, to get to your interview. (But depending on the time of day, just keep in mind there could be a lot of traffic).
Where will you be staying? If you want to go into the City, taking the train (LIRR) is probably your best option.

Not sure why you shouldn't rent a car on Long Island - in NYC you have mass transit, but not on LI.
Your best bet would be to fly into MacArthur and rent a car and then take the train into the city for a day to sightsee.

I would recommend flying and renting a car. Stonybrook is more than an hour's drive outside NYC (and almost 2 hours by LIRR).

They probably mean you shouldn't rent a car in NYC. On LI you should def rent a car.

Re: Interview in Long Island
you definitely need a car on LI. fly into macarthur, pick up your rental at the airport and stonybrook is super close. but you'll want to take the train into the city. the train station is very close to macarthur as well. hotels in the area also.

Yes. Rent a car. If you want to go into NYC take mass transit from your hotel to NYC.

Re: Interview in Long Island
Renting a car on Long Island is different than renting a car in NYC. You NEED a car on Long Island, public transport is practically non existent. I would either rent a car or get a cab at the airport to the interview.

I would rent a car and stay at the Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook. Then to get to NYC I would drive to the Stony Brook train station (you will have to change trains though) or the Ronkonkoma train station (direct train), and take the train into NYC.

Re: Interview in Long Island
Thanks everyone for the information. I appreciate it. I haven't booked a hotel yet. I have to check out the area and see what's available.

And there is also a new hotel on the Stony Brook campus as well. (I'm assuming you're interviewing at the university/hospital)

That one is nice, but they have thieves that work on their staff. I won't get into specifics, but my friend had an incident with her children there, which was absolutely ridiculous.
