update on DD's eating issues - milk protein allergy

DD had her two month doctor's appointment today. She has still been screaming during many of her bottles and not eating like she should. The pediatrician retested her stool for the milk protein allergy, and this time it came up positive! We actually started nutramigen two days ago to see if it made a difference. So far, things have been largely the same, but we'll see what happens. At least we have one answer now!

For those of you whose DC's had a milk protein allergy, did they grow out of it? If so, when?

ETA: How long did it take you to see a change with the new formula?

So glad to hear you have an answer! Hopefully you will notice a difference very soon! My son was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy at 6 weeks. I EBFed him. Our ped felt very strongly that I should not reintroduce dairy into my diet until he was a year old. So we waited, and at a year, he had outgrown it. Though, if I had to guess, I would say he likely outgrew it around 7 or 8 months, just based on my own knowledge.

please be patient with the new formula! it takes time for their guts to heal from the damage done by the proteins.

it took about 2 weeks to see real changes in my son. by the time we started him on milk and yogurt (yogurt 10 months, milk 14 months) he was 100% fine!

my DD was on alimentum and around a year old i started milk products for her- yougurt was okay but milk was a problem until around 18m. She became more intolerant vs allergic, and nowdays she is fine will all dairy.

btw if your insurance covers it try to get your doctor to prescribe the formula.

DS was on Alimentum, we noticed a change in him within 48 hours. As far as him outgrowing the allergy, we gave him yogurt at about 7 months and he was fine so we then introduced cheeses and then at a year old organic milk since he was fine with the yogurt and cheese early on.

Re: update on DD's eating issues - milk protein allergy

My son just had his diaper "tested" but I'm confused if it was the same "test" that everyone here is having. Basically they are just testing the diaper and stool for occult blood (meaning microscopic blood). They then told me this is likely seen with a food allergy like dairy but could be from anything. Is there a more specific test that you guys are having run on the diaper? I hae now cut out all dairy but it could be anything from a virus to a soy allergy etc etc
Thanks!

DD was on Nutramigen. Took a couple of weeks to see a difference, but it definitely helped. Around 6 months I tried switching her off of it, but it was a no go. Around 11.5 months we started the transition to milk and she did just fine with it.

And FYI - if you call them they have a rebate program for the Nutramigen so you can get a few bucks back.

Re: update on DD's eating issues - milk protein allergy

Both of my kids had protein allergies. DS 1 had it less severe than ds 2. At about 7 months we slowly began introducing dairy...yogurt then cheese. He did well with it, but when we switched him to milk at 13 months (transitioned VERY slowly) he spit up a lot, but then was ok. DS 2 threw up every time we gave him yogurt at 7 months, so we herd off. We did cheese a bit later, then yogurt, and he transitioned to milk without a problem. I was pretty lucky bc both my kids seemed to just grow out of it.

This is how our son was tested as well. Our dr. kept testing his stool up until a month after we switched formula to make sure there was no more microscopic blood in his stool. He actually gave is the little kits to take home and 2 weeks later we tested his stool and dropped it off at the drs office and then again at the one month mark we did the same....by that time his stool was fine so we continued on Alimentum. And FWIW, DS is 16 months and has NO allergies to foods and we let him taste everything.

Many doctors like to throw it out as a diagnosis based on bloody stool, when in fact many things can cause bloody stool. Both my DD's were diagnosed with an MSPI and they never really had it-- just Colic.

this is why I'm so frustrated..I feel like we aren't pursuing any other possible causes for bloody stool and I feel like I'm doing all of these dietary changes for nothingChat Icon

The ped asked us for family history of food allergies, etc along with the blood in the stool. Many times there is also a skin rash. The ped said we should see almost immediate results (within 2-4 days on Nutramigen)--in terms of the crying and fussiness. We did not, and they switched him to Neocate. The blood did not come out of his stool for another month and we ended up at a GI because of it (although he said this is very common and really wasn't concerned). When we tried yogurt at 10 months, my DS vomited. When we tried milk at 12 months, he again vomited (these were the only 2 times he vomited). When we recently had a blood test, he came out "very high" for the mlik allergy. The skin test came out negative (reportedly not as accurate as the blood test). Our DS is still on Neocate Jr. and probably will not have milk for a while. The allergist said most grow out of it by 3 years old.

On a side note, the allergist also said lactose intolerance (different than milk protein allergy) can also cause bloody stool.
