Difficult time finding preschool for DD

I am looking for a preschool that does more than teach the kids alphabet sounds, numbers 1-20 and how to write their name. I would like something more heavily emphasized on education. Most of the places I visit, when they tell me what my DD will be doing, she already knows how to do all that and more. I would love to keep her in the preschool she attends now but I can not due to costs since we have to put DS in preschool too. He is about to be 3, she is about to be 4.

I just want a half day program that highly emphasizes education, math, etc. it is only 2.5-3 hours and I want that spend on education not playing outside.

Does anyone know of any preschools I should consider?

I am willing to drive all down nicolls rd, from blue point to stony brook, patchogue, holbrook, holtsville, etc.

Re: Difficult time finding preschool for DD

the preschool i work in does sight words with the kids(the 4 yr old class/pre-k)...as far as math its counting and we also do a unit on money....it is a 2.5 hr day, we do not have a playground so there is no outside time....the 3 year old program the children learn to recognize and trace their names and eventually write it as well as the alphabet, we have a new letter each week and numbers.....its just that we are in west babylon, which is probably too far for you...most schools do not do any of this and its the basic skills...it will be hard for you to find something what you are looking for, academic wise, in only a 3 yr program...maybe consider a school with a longer day?(daycare preschools do more sometimes) good luck with your search!

I dont know if any preschools will do what you are looking for, b/c that would not be age appropriate based on state standards possibly? Most preschools would allow around 1/2 hr for playtime, based on the age of the children and developmental standards.

Agreed....the standards for kindergarten are not for the children to even know their letters...they need to know their full name, address, phone number, and colors and how to be self sufficient using the bathroom. preschool is not a requirement for starting kindergarten...the school i work in does do sight words and letters but its introduced (since in kindergarten these days they work these kids like crazy and they will learn the 92 dolch sight words) and the kids are not forced or expected to know them.

Re: Difficult time finding preschool for DD

For you child's age, there is just no need for there to be more of an emphasis on education as you call it. The most important activity of early childhood/preschool is play. Your child will learn quite a bit more about the world and math, science, etc through play. A huge problem with our educational systme now is the lack of play in pre-school.

It may be difficult for you to find what you are looking for given that it is not age appropriate. If you want to push your child that much at an early age it would probably be best if you taught those things at home.

Do not underestimate the importance of play. It's funny bc when looking for a school I specifically looked for one that emphasized play and not just academics and did not rely on things like "dittos"for learning, and I made sure they received NO homework. My child will be in a structured, high-pressured, standarized-testing happy environment long enough once he starts K, I saw no need to start him at age 2. JMO.

Kiddie Kampus in Bayport has a program called Global Studies that moves beyond a basic 4 year old program.

I have to agree with all this. My twins will be attending preschool this fall. The will be four at the end of December, and we opted to put them in the 3-year old class. They already know colors, shapes, numbers, letters, etc. but I didn't feel they needed to be in such an academic environment at such a young age. They will learn to play with other kids, and be in a classroom setting, and I think that is really the most important at this age.
Next year they will go to pre-k through the school district which will place a greater emphasis on writing, etc.

This is me as well. I wanted to make sure there was play involved every day. I didn't want my child to be pressured so early on, and felt play was very important in preschool. However, I guess to each is own.

Re: Difficult time finding preschool for DD

I just want to clarify that I am in no way opposed to learning through play. My children both went to a play-focused daycare center. The issue comes that my DD knows already all the things the curriculum plans on teaching- or a big majority of those things, i do not want my child to be bored, or to not be challenged.

I am a SAHM, and I do not need a full day program, the day care i used for the kids does not offer a part time program.

I just want a place that will challenge her and not teach her things she knows. If she can already read small books, write more than her name, knows shapes, colors and all that basic stuff, i dont feel i should pay the stiff fees for a 2.5 hour program that is not going to move her education forward.

I will look into kiddikampuses program.
(just looked at this, half day is only 830-1115, no afternoon program, will not work for us)

ITA!!!!! I have a degree in early childhood education and I agree with everything you said. Preschool should be focusing on learning through play and socialization. Obviously if you're dd knows all the material being taught you could always teach her more at home. I just don't think you're going to find a school that will have an academic program like you are looking for. I have visited and studied a lot of the prek in the area you're looking for and not one comes to mind with the criteria you're looking for. I would be searching for a school who does not use dittos, has child centered themed learning, take a trips, allows for outdoor play certified teachers and most importantly focuses on play.

Re: Difficult time finding preschool for DD

I'm not in your area or I would recommend my DS's school because it sounds like what you are looking for. There are also a few schools other than DS's in my area but we are not close to you.

For starters, I would check out any local Montessori schools since they tend to follow the pace of the individual child so if they are more advanced then, what they learn will also be more advanced.

Also, I don't agree with what many other posters have posted. I find a number of 4 yr olds in our area to be beyond what you posted as the norm for a child to know at this age and, there are several schools that do teach them this. My DS is in pre-k and he is doing counting in the 100's, addition and subtraction, sight words and basic sounding out reading. He has also learned a lot about the planets, continents, countries, enviornment etc. He is smart and advanced BUT, there are friends in other schools in our area that are the same age and doing even way more than this. There are schools where all the 4 yr olds are fully reading and working with a reading specialist, doing multiplication and division. I actually feel my DS's school doesn't do enough!!

ETA: Also wanted to add that my DS IS learning these things through play and through doing activities he believes are play. There is no homework, no worksheets etc. I couldn't disagree more about what alot of posters have posted. In my area that is not the norm. for pre-k or K and sounds more like a 2 or 3 program than pre-k and k.

I also think you should look into a Montessori school. I am sending my DS to one in bluepoint this summer its called Montessori learning center. The class is mixed ages from 2.5 to 5yrs old. They all work at the pace and level that they are on. So if they are more advanced than they will set them up with higher level activities. Good luck!

this is what I was going to suggest. Montessori really allows children to go at their own pace.

I would contact Montimom. She sent her kids to Montessori around that area and she was very involved and knew about the good and bad ones.

I was going to say Montessori as well. Dh feels like you, and thinks ds should be learning more and playing a bit less. Ds knows everything the kids are learning already, but I put him in nursery for social reasons . We looked at Montessori and they seemed strict, and focused on individual play. I didn't want him playing alone so we didn't place him there.

I personally feel if you have a bright child, that will show in kindergarten no matter what kind of school they attended before. Dh feels that the kids play most of the day, it bugs him

There is always long island school for the gifted, if the iq is over 130 that would be an option
