ipad 2
My laptop is old and done. Going on Sunday to get a new one, but was also thinking about getting the ipad 2. Can I do basically all the same things on an ipad that a laptop does? We do have another laptop in the house that my mil never uses so I can use that if I really need it. Which one would you get laptop or ipad 2. What exactly can you do on the ipad?

Re: ipad 2
I love my iPad 2 but i dont think i could do without my laptop. I use my iPad for "entertainment" where as I use my laptop for "work"
I used Excel and Word alot and yes there are apps for the iPad for those appilcations, I like doing things like that on a laptop better than the iPad.
I just re-read your post, and since you do have a laptop at home, I say that you would be happy with the iPad. i dont think the iPad is something that can replace a laptop.

Re: ipad 2
I decided on a laptop a few months ago.
I do think the ipad type will be the future and replace laptop all together. Just not quite now!
So I got a laptop and think that in a few years 5-7 years, technology will have changed and I will change then.
Right now, I think of the ipad as a "toy". A smaller portable version of the laptop for reading books, browsing the internet while on the beach, train, lunch breaks, etc... but without the bulkiness of a laptop.

Re: ipad 2
Do NOT get an IPAD if you need a laptop.
They dont do the same things, nor do they have the same capabilities.
The IPAD is great toy, fun to have and use. But it will NOT substitute for a laptop.

Re: ipad 2
It really depends on what you do on the computer.
I tested the iPad at my job and my recommendation was that it can not be used as a replacement to a computer unless,
you use it mostly to watch videos and or email.
It does not use traditional software like office but does have applications that are only similar to MS office. The iPad 'office' apps look beautiful but are no where near as powerful.
The iPad can not be shared amongst different users unless they want to use the same exact software, music files, etc...
The unit is designed to 'live' in the cloud. It has a relatively small hard drive so if you have a lot of music files, you'll find yourself having to pick and choose which songs you put on the iPad.
It does have some very cool features and one of my favorite is probably the fact that you can create your own apps. Doing this does require at least an intermediate knowledge of computers. I've tried my hand creating apps and it really is not the type of thing that every iPad owner will be doing.
