Serious about quitting smoking-need suggestions please

I really want to quit. I did it cold turkey in January but went back to it in March. Do any of you know people who quit and how they did it, besides cold turkey? I have also tried the electronic cig and it works for a while, but then just makes me want to have a real one. Any help is really appreciated. TIA

So did my FIL....over 30 yrs of smoking and quit in 1 day. It will be 5 yrs since he one next Oct.

Good Luck. I quit smoking, cold turkey, 7 & 1/2 yrs ago. It was the best thing I could of ever done for myself. I quit after watching a close loved one pass away from Cancer. Its tough, as you know but so worth it.

My husband was a very heavy smoker....2 packs a day. Last June he quit by using the patch. It really worked for him and he's still smoke free. Good luck

Thanks- the only thing that scares me about the patch is that I heard it's really bad if you smoke while having it on and I don't trust myself Chat Icon

My mom quit smoking with the patch.

I quit cold turkey. On thing that helped with quitting that was was that I told EVERYONE. Strangers in the elevator. Family. Friends. Acquaintances. I found that this did two things. 1) It gave me accountability, since I felt like I was letting everyone down if I smoked. 2) It's a nice little affirmation when you tell people and they go, "Oh, good for you!" which is what pretty much everyone says.

Good luck!!

i agree!!

i quit a bunch of times. it takes practice. the second to last time was with the patch. that helped A LOT. the last time, i had just met DH and he said he would never date someone who smoked.

Social support is key to quitting smoking! Also, i didnt go out to a bar for 6 months because that was a huge trigger for me. Stay away from triggers.

I also took up knitting and chewed bubble gum.

I also want to quit smoking, I ordered free patches from nysmokefree.com. my bff has not smoked since starting the patch 10 days ago.

I am still waiting for them in the mail, they should be here any day now.

It might be expensive, but worth it in the long run...think about how much cigarettes cost...I think my DH spends about $9 a pack Chat Icon

My boyfriend has been taking Chantix, he needs to get off of it. It has really messed with his sleep and his personality. He has become distant, angry, adgitated. it took us a while to relaize this so this weekend he is speaking with his doctor about not taking it anymore.

My mom quit but counting how many cigs she had each day. (let's say 10).

She'd put them in a CLEAR zip-top bag. This was her "allowance" for the day. So if she had 5 before 10 AM she would have to ration them out for the rest of the day.

After a while, she would cut back. If she had extra in her bag for a few days in a row, it was time to cut back.

It took most people I know a few times to stay quit. So don't look at going back as a failure, but more as a stepping stone to the REAL quit. Each time you quit, it makes it easier.

I tried a few times, the final attempt was succesful using BOTH the patch and gum.

It is SOOOOOOO incredibly hard, but so worth it not to be a slave to the $$$, bad smell and the long term health effects.

Best of luck to you !!Chat Icon

Re: Serious about quitting smoking-need suggestions please

It took me 2 years of serious attempts and going back and forth to finally quit.

I actually had success with Nicorette gum. I quit for about a year that way. The last time I did it cold turkey.

Just keep trying. You can do it. I promise, it will get easier Chat Icon

cold turkey. and now I know that I can NEVER have a cigarette - even socially, because if i have one i will want more. In the past I had quit for long stretches and then thought I could handle just one. I imagine it's the same with most addictions.

Re: Serious about quitting smoking-need suggestions please

My best friend took about a month or so.

She picked a day and counted how many cigs she had a day. After that day she started cutting down 1 cig a day. Between learning how to space them out and cutting down, she ended up quitting.

She also said the hardest part was the social/hand aspect. It was hard being at a party/bar and NOT smoking when others were. She also said she had a hard time with keeping her hand occupied. But she just put her nind to it, and didnt gain weight.

Good luck.

My other friend did it with the patch.

Laser therapy. Both MIL and FIL smoked 2 to 3 packs a day and once they never smoked again after walking out of the office after having the laser treatment. I know 2 other people that had the same success.

Re: Serious about quitting smoking-need suggestions please

Well, I quit cold turkey - that was the only way for me to do it. Tapering didn't work (nor did reading that silly book that everyone swears by - to me it just made me want to smoke and was the same sentence over and over again for 200 pages).

However, I do know someone who successfully quit by having her ear zapped. Don't ask me for the science on that because I have no idea what I'm talking about. Another friend of mine quit using Chantix.

Good luck! It's the hardest thing in the world but it is SO WORTH IT. I am 2.5 years smoke-free and I feel so great about it! It CAN be done! It is NOT insurmountable!
