You will NOT believe what work told me. (UPDATE 2/28)

My job stinks. We are in a department towns away from the other departments so we are hidden in the woods where no one can find us. Thus, we are normally forgotten. In a nutshell, ergonomics are thrown out the window. It is a very uncomfortable place to work on the back and neck.

With that said, you will not believe what happened:

My work station (the only station that is equipped for my job) has a lot of desk before I can reach any buttons and/or the keyboard. I need to really reach to touch what I need to. I asked, with a growing belly, if the keyboard could be extended. I also asked if the buttons could be brought closer to me. (I won't be able to reach them in a few months.) They told me to sit SIDEWAYS, so my belly wasn't in the way.

UPDATE 2/28:
The VP of operations came by yesterday to give me my review. While he was there I explained to him the situation with a growing belly. Then my boss explained to him how I can sit sideways. The VP just looked at my boss and said 'ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!' Chat Icon Chat Icon My boss went on to show how I can sit sideways and the VP said 'No, no, no!!! Just stop it!!' He got on the phone immediately and told the engineers to come out and redo my desk!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am pretty sure that they HAVE to accomodate for a changing medical issue. I know that a co-worker of mine here got into a thing with HR b/c they would not give her a new chair after she had surgery. She fought it & they had to buy her the proper chair.

Def talk to HR & if they are no help maybe ask some of the HR gals on here who to go to for help.

What a PITA!Chat Icon

You definitely have a case - that goes into disability law and needing to make accomodations. If you were suddenly in a wheelchair (god forbid), they would have to make accomodations for you, and not tell you something like that,. Same if you were obese, or any other diability....

I agree. They HAVE to make accomodations for you. Telling you to sit sideways is not how they solve the problem. All they need to do is buy an extender and install it so you can comfortably do your job.

You'd be surprised how they deal with 'problems' at this place. There is no union and they don't work like a normal company. For instance, we are a 24 hour job. 1 person HAS to be there at all times. One girl was infamous for showing up 5-10 minutes late EVERYDAY. Instead of telling her to get there on time, they just told the guy ahead of her to add overtime to his timesheet every week. Chat Icon I could go on for days about other things.

And, my yearly review is next week. Everybody I work with agrees I won't be getting a raise like I used to because they are frustrated with me. That's what I get for working with all men.

Will a regular keyboard extension cable fix the problem? If so, I think I'd go to Staples myself instead of making an issue when there will be much bigger battles to fight later!

It's not just the keyboard. It's every button I work with. I work on commercials and need to change the levels of every commercial, so it's not too red/green/bright/dark/loud,etc. I have a ton of buttons to reach, plus monitors, plus the keyboard.

Sitting sideways is not an appropriate accomodation. I would talk to HR (if you have one). If not, tell them it's unacceptable.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I totally feel your pain. My boss smokes the most stinkiest cigars EVER and I have to sit in the office right next to him. Their solution: open your window. Lovely.

It is a shame that I am going to say this, but if you are planning not to come back to work, make a stink about it. Call HR, do what you can and make a big deal out of it. I chose not to because I need to return to this job after my leave and I don't need to give them something to "use" against me (nice, right?)

Small offices DO get away with more, its depressing. My office is out of control, the cigar smoke and the dog who isn't trained are just the beginningChat Icon

Re: You will NOT believe what work told me. Need advice!

Do we work at the same place? Chat Icon I had a guy that kept bringing his dog in and I asked him to stop numerous times because I'm deahtly allergic. He refused. I went to the big boss and he reprimanded the guy. That guy then came to me, got right in my face and yelled liked a lunatic (others saw it) about how I could've gotten him fired and how dare I take food out of his kids mouths. Yes, I'm in the wrong for you breaking the law. Chat Icon He didn't talk to me for 8 months (pure bliss). Then he got drunk at the Christmas party and, while talking to my boobs, asked if I had the oysters because they are an aphrodisiac.

I don't know why I just shared that story, but now I'm on a roll. Chat Icon

Actually, this is not true. Pregnancy is not considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act. That means that your employer is not required to provide you with a reasonable accommodation.

However, you cannot be discriminated against b/c of your pregnancy. Your employer must treat pregnant and non-pregnant employees equally. For example, if your employer has provided accommodations to others with medical conditions or short term disabilities, he cannot deny you a similar accommodation. Can you speak to anyone in HR about this?

I work in television. I make sure all the commercials have the right video and audio levels. If a commercial or promo is too green/red/bright/dark/loud it's my fault. So I have a lot of buttons to work with.
