Yet another post about the Flu Shot

This one is a bit different however . . .

I am my XSIL's health care proxy. She is currently in a nursing home dying from Huntington's Disease. For the first time ever the home needs my consent to give her a flu shot. She has been there for a very long time and apparently has always gotten one.

I however, have never gotten one, and am 98% sure I'm not going to give DD one. This is the third year DH has gotten one.

I feel a bit hypocritical to tell the nursing home to go ahead and give it to her, when I'm not giving it to DD. OTH, she's had it every year for the last 8 and she's very susceptible to anything and everything given where she is, and how advanced the Huntington's is.

WWYD??

I think in her situation in her enviroment it's a good idea to give it. It's good to know in the past she has not had a reaction to it, so there is no reason not to give it.

Re: Yet another post about the Flu Shot

She has gotten the flu shots already and it's something that was given to her every year.

I would give it to her. I would not change someone's health care because I became the proxy.

Nursing home are notorious for epidemy of flu in the Winter.

It's OK to give it to her and not DS.

I don't think it is hypocritical when you are someone's proxy you are supposed to obey their wishes not what your wants are -so I think it is irrelevant if you would give it to yourself if it is something she would want to get. Nursing homes they are very likely to catch illnesses and if she has gotten it for the past 8 years I would definitely give it to her.

ITA. I do understand your hesitation, but I would do as she has been doing already.

I would definitely give it to her. She obviously is in favor of getting it and you should respect those wishes

good luck and I am sorry to hear about your XSIL

Since she has gotten if for the past 8 years, I totally would get it for her.

It isn't hypocritical at all, as an OP said, you are making decisions based on what she would want, not what you necessiarly would!

Since you know my views on things pretty welll I'll tell you a story instead..it'll explain it better.

When Ariel was about a year old they came out with the Chicken Pox vaccine. It wasnt manditory nor was it available to everyone. I was asked if I wanted Ariel to get the vaccine. I had her get the shot b/c she was so susceptible to everything that was going around....had it been the twins I would not have gotten the shot...

Does this make sense?

Edited b/c I cant spell...Chat Icon

Sounds like you should tell them to give her the shot.

Re: Yet another post about the Flu Shot

she is in a health facility... and that's where all colds / diseases spread like fire... While I'm not vaccine happy by any stretch of the imagination, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to give her the shot, if I were in your situation...

Re: Yet another post about the Flu Shot

It's important she get it. I honestly DO believe in the benefit of the shot - especially in a high risk environment as long as the patient is not allergic. I get it almost every year (and the one's I did not I got the flu - last time 3 years ago was BAD). DH got it this year b/c of DD (and he never gets it b/c he doesn't care that he gets sick), and DD will definitely get it. I do agree with previous posters about the proxy.

ITA! I also agree that because she's in a healthcare facility there are germs everywhere.

I agree also Darlene, she's made her own decision to have it the last 8 years & if she could would choose to again

The thing is she hasn't made the decision herself (she hasn't been competent to do that) - the facility made it without consulting me. This year however the procedure has changed and they are consulting me.
