Yes, I created a different screen name, but I need to know real opinions.

What would you do? I have 2 boys ( a 4 yr old and a 16 month yr old). Currently, I work PT and LOVE IT!!! I work 3 days a week. Next year, my supervisor said I could stay PT (3 days a week, 60% of my FT salary) or still stay PT, but work 5 days a week, 6 HRs a day which would be 80% of FT salary. (I am truly so fortunate, I have a supervisor who lets me be flexible).

So I would earned 20% more if I do 5 days a week at 6 hrs a day.

I am so lucky, my parents and in-laws are with my boys the 3 days I work, My older one does go to preschool and my father picks him up 2 days a week.

With the 5 days a week, it's less hours a day, but that is alot to ask my parents and in-laws.

Would you do five 6 hr days (80% of your salary) or 3 days a week 60% of your salary)?

It depends on a lot of factors -- how much the extra 20% was, how long my commute was, etc. But I'd be inclined to say no and stay 3 days a week

Would this extra money help you? Could your parents and inlaws make a schedule so they can help you out longer one week and then shorter the next week?

Honestly, I would stay at 3 days. I have a 3 year old and a 1.5 year old, and I currently work 3 days.

I love having two days a week home with them. Also, the work weeks FLY because I am so busy (which is good and bad, but mostly good).

I would stay 3/5th unless they 20% would be a life changer. I wouldn't want to rely on the grandparents if I could work it out.

My reasoning is - you are already resume buildlng, staying current in your profession, hopefully contributing to a 401(k). Your vacation time is pro-rated but you need a lot less of it because you can schedule your time, doctor's appointments, etc off on your other 2 days.

I'd hold off on the 80% work schedule until they were in elementary school.

Putting money aside since im assuming you were doing ok finanially With 3 days pay,

How long is your commute?
Im a teacher, I work 7 hrs, 8-3 but im up at 530, in the car by 630. I get home by 4.

Its great, but it is definetly a full day. By no means do I feel like I work p/t.

5 days a week,6 hours a day does not seem p/t to me. I would keep working 3 days a week.

I would hold off. I think 5 days a week will seem FT.

Working five days,. 30 hours a week to me is not really part-time. If you were going to do that, I'd just work full-time. I would stay at 3 days. Those two FULL days off and home make a difference.

Re: Yes, I created a different screen name, but I need to know real opinions.

Honestly I would stay 3 days. Like others have said, working 5 days, 30 hrs a week plus commute to me is not part time. Having 4 days total including weekends off would be ideal bc it allows you to get Dr appts, errands & what not done & still have the weekends as a family. Plus for me, relying on my parents & ils 5 days a week seems a bit much.

On the flip side, if the pay increase would help significantly, you would have to consider it but from your original post, I don't think that's your reasoning.

I would personally stay at 3 days if the finances were in order. If we needed the extra money and childcare was worked out, then I'd do the 5 days.

ITA!! Once they're in elmentary school the 80% schedule would be perfect for on and off the bus. Unless finances are that tight, I wouldn't go to 5 days. Me personally I would rather work 2-3 long days at work and have the rest of the time home with my family.

Re: Yes, I created a different screen name, but I need to know real opinions.

IMO, if I am going to work 5 days I might as well be FT with 100% salary.

With 2 days off completely, my boys can have a pajama day and we can stay home all day and play, we can go to lunch, we can go to the aquarium when its less crowded and still be home before dinner etc.
If you move to a 5 day/6hour work week, you are gaining 2 hours a day, which I know is valuable but IMO you are not really able to do alot of the things that you can while working your current schedule.

I used to work 3 days a week and it was ideal because for the other 4 days I still felt like a SAHM.

I agree with the pp, that schedule will be great when the kids are in school but I would stick with the 3 days UNLESS you NEED the money!

Re: Yes, I created a different screen name, but I need to know real opinions.

I would personally stay on 3 days. I am a SAHM who works about 15 hours a week. (Thursday nights & Sundays, which my husband is usually home unless working OT). I love being able to be at home with my DS as much as possible, as well as working a couple days a week. The best of both worlds! If you are financially able to stay where you are, I personally wouldn't work more. Good luck with whatever you choose!
