I've never had to make up the hours that you get off when you leave early on a summer friday.
But, i work in advertising, which is not a 9-5 job so we work till 6 or 7 most days anyway.
I assume if you have a set 40 hour work week, they want you to still work the 40 hours.
My current job gives you 4 additional summer days to take during the summer months.
Some places close early (1 or 2) on Fridays but all that does is mean that those days are usually hectic and you dont really get to leave until 3 or 4, so its not really worth it.
I guess it depends on the industry you're in.

we don't have short days in the summer..never have.
It's usually not as busy in the summer but I don't see me getting out any earlier.

We have half day Fridays in the Summer. We do have to make up our time by doing 8:30 to 5:30 Mon - Thurs (ETA: instead of 9-5) and then we leave at 1 on Friday.
I always work way over the 40-hour week during the year and come in at 7:15 twice a week, so my boss is more flexible with me.

We're supposed to do 10-hour days since we get Fridays off in the summer, but our dept head doesn't make us do it.

My company does something similar to yours. We work 8:30 - 4:30pm Monday thru Thursday with a 1/2 lunch. On Friday's we do 8:30 - 2pm with a 1/2 lunch.

The company I work for now doesn't have summer hours. The last company I worked for made us come in a half hour early Mon-Thurs and then leave 2 hours early on Friday.
The company before that one (a bus company) closed the office on Friday's and we didn't get paid for it.

My current job doesnt do summer hours but previously it was up to you to make up the hours Monday through Thursday so most people would stay an extra hour and then take a half day on Friday.
Honestly, its so nice to even have the option I probably wouldnt care however it was set up. I totalllllly miss summer hours

Our company has you come in a half hour early in order to leave at 1 on the day you leave at 1 you do not get a lunch.

We have Summer Fridays -
Most of the company leaves at 1:00 - for those of us who work w/ the market and can not leave early. they give us 5 additional vacation days (I guess the other have 10 1/2 days)
We don't have to make up any time -

We have summer hrs but don't have to make it up, we just don't have regular scheduled breaks on early fridays like we do the rest of the week.
