My mommy question too:

How sore were your nipples your first few days of BFing?
When did you milk come in?
He's feeding about 15min. on each boob but he's a sleeper and always passes out, so I'd say he's getting a solid 8 minutes per boob give or take...is that ok?
(he is peeing every diaper change)
*he was fussy last night and wide awake after each feeding, am I doing anything wrong? I think he was gassy b/c he was lifting both legs while fussing, I tried the bicycle and at his 5am feeding he was farting up a storm, so you think that's why he had a rough night?
*I did allow him to sleep on my chest twice....is that bad? I know I shouldn't have but I didn't know what else to do to calm him down. His boo, he likes it to soothe then spits it out, which I'm fine with except come 3am when I put him back in the bassinet, he was looking for it...found it...spit it out...fussed for it again, found it, spit it out...it was a vicious cycle lol. But after his 5am (he latched at like 5:20ish and did about 15 on each boob) feeding he slept until 9!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So about 3 hours in between feeding, I was shocked & now again he's gone 3 hours...that's ok too, right?

SORRY FOR THE QUESTIONS ALREADY!!!!

Hey Devon!

I didnt breastfeed but I just wanted to say Congratulations! Joey is beautiful!!!!!!! My DS was the same exact size and measured the same, but I went 3 wks early LOL!!! So I know what you mean when you say, perfect!

I can answer that no it was not a bad thing that you let him sleep on your chest. He just came out of you!! He needs to be close to his Mommy right now! He feels secure being close to you! I did the same exact thing for the first 2 wks. So enjoy him!!!

Re: X-Post--New Mommy on board

Welcome & congrats!

It is normal for your nipples to be a little sore at first, but if it's really painful, that's probably not normal and may be a sign of poor latch. With my DD I was in extreme pain, my nipples cracked & bled & I cringed at even the thought of feeding- she had a poor latch. DS I knew his latch was perfect, but my nipples were a little sore for the first couple of weeks, but I never cracked or bled. Try Lanolin to soothe them.

As far as the feeding length, I usually say watch the baby not the clock. If he seems to be satisfied then you're fine. If you aren't sure, try undressing him down to his diaper & rubbing his feet during nursing sessions. That usually keeps newborns awake.

Both of my kids have co-slept, so I don't think anything is wrong with him sleeping on your chest.

Re: X-Post--New Mommy on board

I think i'm a rare case but the worst I had was a teeny bit of soreness in the beginning, just had to get used to it. DD latched perfectly right away.

My milk came in a day after I came home from the hospital so I think it was 4 days after she was born. You'll know when it comes in, they start really gulping!

DD was always a fast eater like that... she'd do mayyyybe 15 mins on each boob as a newborn then soon after it went to 10 mins on each and now each feeding is about 15 mins total.

He'll let you know when he's hungry so don't worry about him sleeping or going too long in between feedings. I EBF on demand in the beginning (and still do on weekends when i'm home) and didn't stick to a schedule or look at the time.

DD slept on my chest in the beginning sometimes if she woke up at 4-5am. I LOVED that. I'd feed her and she'd fall asleep on me and i couldn't bear to put her down. It's ok!

Re: X-Post--New Mommy on board

my nipples were very, very sore and still are 20 days post partum. I breastfed DS for the first 9 days and had to stop because it was really, really uncomfortable. DS was also feeding for an hour at each feeding, so I'm not sure if he was latched properly or he was just soothing himself. I now pump and bottle feed him and my nipples are still really sore. My milk came in on day 3 or 4. DS sleeps on my chest or DH every night after he eats. Once he's in a deep sleep, we put him in the bassinet. Three hours between feedings is fine. DS has never eaten sooner than 2.5 hours.

Re: X-Post--New Mommy on board

Hi and welcome to the mommy boards!!

*How sore were your nipples your first few days of BFing?-I never experienced sore nipples. I would invest in a pack of breast pads with lanolin gel. It will protect your nipples from your bra or running against clothes

When did you milk come in? I would say the 4/5 day

He's feeding about 15min. on each boob but he's a sleeper and always passes out, so I'd say he's getting a solid 8 minutes per boob give or take...is that ok? Absolutely! It takes a lot of energy out of a newborn to get the milk out. My dd would also pass right out

*he was fussy last night and wide awake after each feeding, am I doing anything wrong? I think he was gassy b/c he was lifting both legs while fussing, I tried the bicycle and at his 5am feeding he was farting up a storm, so you think that's why he had a rough night?
That could explain his fussiness alright! You are not doing anything wrong! It could be gas or simply adjusting to life outside the womb

*I did allow him to sleep on my chest twice....is that bad? Absolutely not! Enjoy your newborn! My dd has slept on my chest a handful of times! I wouldn’t change a thing! There is no better feeling than a sleeping baby on your chest!

3 hours in between feeding, I was shocked & now again he's gone 3 hours...that's ok too, right? Absolutely! I subscribe to the “ they’ll wake up when they are hungry” routine. Let him sleep if he is sleeping. But I normally don’t let it go past 4 hours during the day ..

Re: X-Post--New Mommy on board

so many congrats dev!!!!! so so so happy you're here to join us :)

as for your questions...

How sore were your nipples your first few days of BFing? pretty sore, i remember describing to my friends as someone pulling on your nipples 24/7...it's not something you've ever experienced before, it hurt for me for a while before it felt tolerable.
When did you milk come in? she was born on a monday and milk came in thursday.
He's feeding about 15min. on each boob but he's a sleeper and always passes out, so I'd say he's getting a solid 8 minutes per boob give or take...is that ok? he'll wake up when he's hungry...plus if he is peeing in every diaper change you're set :)
(he is peeing every diaper change)
*he was fussy last night and wide awake after each feeding, am I doing anything wrong? I think he was gassy b/c he was lifting both legs while fussing, I tried the bicycle and at his 5am feeding he was farting up a storm, so you think that's why he had a rough night? probably, if he continues doing it, you might need to pay more close attention to what you're eating and change your diet around...but wait you said your milk didn't come in yet right? is he on formula? you might need to see if the formula is causing the gassiness.
So about 3 hours in between feeding, I was shocked & now again he's gone 3 hours...that's ok too, right? sleeping on your chest is completely and 100% okay! poor little guy was used to being in your belly for 9 months only to come out to this cold unfamiliar world...the contact he feels when he sleeps on your chest reminds him of "home" Chat Icon let him do it as often as he needs...remember - you can't spoil a newborn!

Re: X-Post--New Mommy on board

Congrats on your new little one!!

I didn't really have sore nipples. I used the lanolin from the beginning and I'm not sure if that's why or if I was just lucky. I stopped using it after a few days and now I only use it when needed, which is only on days that I pump a lot.

In the beginning she fed for the same amount of time as your DS. And she was constantly falling asleep on each boob. I would change her between boobs to help wake her up to eat on the other side.

I let my DD sleep on my chest or sometimes DHs chest in the early morning hours. Enjoy it now!! It never was something she was used to because we'd let her sleep in her bassinet most times and we'd put her down for naps too. But we held her while sleeping all the time too. It such a fun bonding time, enjoy it!!

I gave my DD a pacifier right before we left the hospital. In the beginning she would suck like your DS and still does, but now she only uses it to fall asleep and once it's out of her mouth and she's sleeping, she doesn't wake up.

All the best!!

How sore were your nipples your first few days of BFing?
Mine hurt pretty bad for the first week but the pain and soreness went away quickly.

When did you milk come in?
Day 4/5

*I did allow him to sleep on my chest twice....is that bad?
I don't think it's bad. I did this a lot the first few weeks too. It was the only way ds slept for more than 10 minutes the first week or two.

Re: X-Post--New Mommy on board

I was sore for about 10 days, then my nipples got used to it and now I can't wait to feed because It empties them and feel good! In the beginning I was very very sore and my baby was feeding anywhere for 5 to 45 minutes on each boob.

Re: X-Post--New Mommy on board

How sore were your nipples your first few days of BFing? - Pretty sore for the first week and then it was fine.

When did you milk come in? - 2nd day after my c-section.

He's feeding about 15min. on each boob but he's a sleeper and always passes out, so I'd say he's getting a solid 8 minutes per boob give or take...is that ok? - Definitely okay! He'll pretty much eat on demand at this stage. Sometimes it will be longer and sometimes shorter. Eventually he'll get on a schedule.
(he is peeing every diaper change)

he was fussy last night and wide awake after each feeding, am I doing anything wrong? I think he was gassy b/c he was lifting both legs while fussing, I tried the bicycle and at his 5am feeding he was farting up a storm, so you think that's why he had a rough night? - You're not doing anything wrong. It sounds like he has his days and nights confused which is very normal. He'll work it out soon.

I did allow him to sleep on my chest twice....is that bad? I know I shouldn't have but I didn't know what else to do to calm him down. - This is where you will get varying opinions. I'm of the mindset that it's okay to do this when they're so young. Just like I believe you cannot pick up a newborn too often. In the beginning, it's about establishing trust and a bond so the only way he knows you're there is by you holding him, etc. Do what you feel is right in your heart and trust your instincts.

- It's totally fine! He'll be eating and sleeping for different intervals for a while. Once you think a pattern is developing, it may change and then change again. All normal stuff.

You're doing fine so just enjoy every minute of your new little boy because they grow up in the blink of an eye.
