WWYD: Which would you prefer - PT daycare or PT nanny?

I go back to work in July and have to figure out childcare logistics. DH and I both have very hourly intensive jobs. DH works 70+ hours and I work about 60-70 hours a week. The worst part about our jobs is that it is very unpredictable when we get out of work.

My mom is going to watch DS while we are at work most of the time but she is getting old. I'm trying to decide between getting a PT nanny who comes to the house (schedule TBD) or sending DS to daycare PT. Ideally my mom would watch him about 30 hours and the PT daycare or nanny would be about 25 hours.

We are considering Bright Horizons Woodbury or Tutor Time Syosset. Kiddie Academy Syosset doesn't have PT daycare.

WWYD? PT Nanny or PT Daycare?

With your circumstances, I would say nanny.

A daycare may not have the hours you need and at the same time, there is usually very limited options for daycare for infants.

It's hard to find a spot for the few daycares that have PT for infants and it's not really much cheaper than FT.

That being said, since your DC will be with your mom, I would go for daycare for the rest of the time for socializaition with other children which DC would probably not have with your mom.

At such a young age I would say nanny for the special one on one attention. *If* and *when* I get my teaching job, Sydnie will be older and I plan on doing daycare 2 days a week to also give my mom a break but for infants, if a nanny is an option, IMO I think it is better. Chat Icon

Yes, PT daycare is pretty much the same price as FT daycare. I understand why but it's still very annoying for parents. Bright Horizons has 6h/day options as well as 2,3,5 days/week. Tutor Time has an 8-3 option but it's only $10/week cheaper than FT.

I would say it really depends on the age of your DC. When DS was an infant I preferred a nanny. Now as a toddler I prefer a daycare. I love the socialization a daycare provides.

For an infant, I would definitely get a nanny, but for an older child, I would definitely go with the daycare.

I would prefer a daycare. My reasoning is I didn't want to count on one person for my daycare.

Re: WWYD: Which would you prefer - PT daycare or PT nanny?

I would say Nanny-my DH and I are both in sales and work from home but have days when we are on the road all day(like yesterday I was gone from 6AM-6PM, but today I am spending the day with my boys and gave my nanny the day off. I LOVE her and she loves my kids. It has worked out very well for us. She is very reliable-she had one day where she couldn't come but luckily I did not have appts that day. If I did I would have had to reschedule but no big deal to me.
