WWYD? Kind of freaking out, and I'm not a freaking out kind of person...

If you've read Deedlebugs' birth story, you'll know what I am talking about...

We go to the same practice. I'm scheduled to deliver at the same hospital. I am also going to try for a VBAC, but have no problems having a C if I need one...

I feel SO BAD about what happened to Kristin (Chat Icon for you sweetie) and of course now I'm freaking out that something similar could happen to me. Med mal bells are ringing in my head Chat Icon

Would you address your concerns with the OBs at the practice? Obviously they have to respect patient confidentiality and there is NO WAY I'd ever bring up someone else's name, but this is a serious issue and I don't even have the slightest idea of how to deal with it.

Absolutely bring up your concerns! Speak to Kristin first about having her name used, but they should know darn well that patients could be friends.

That being said, yes don't mention her name and just say that you know someone who had a complication that could have been easily avoided, what steps they are doing to rectify it and anything else to put you at ease.

Heck, I am in S. Florida and I am addressing stuff like this with my OB!

And if you read this Kristin-we love you and many Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

LB, absolutely talk to them about it and please feel free to use my name when talking to them. I have no problems with it at all. I do NOT want something like that happening to you. I was the 3rd woman that day to hemorrhage. I have to be honest, this was not any of our doctors fault, the residents were the ones who made all the mistakes. They are the ones who are going to be #1 in your care after your C/S is complete.

You can bring it up to the OB and discuss your concerns with them, I agree with Michelle that you should ask Kristin if she thinks its ok to use her name.

Now, coming from a med mal stand point (and Kristin, you KNOW how I feel about what happened..) and this is going to sound silly, but accidents happen, of course it is people's health and well being but that being said, med mal insurance is truly like car insurance, to cover those accidents.

I worked in med mal for years, and there are repeat offenders, but a lot of times with L&D cases, things can happen in a split second that leave even the best, most fabulous doctors unpreparedChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The third patient to hemorrhage that day?!? Oh hon, I am so sorry for that. For the original poster I would specify that you only want attendings doing your l&d. If there are residents they are to observe only. You do not give them permission to touch you. As a patient that is well within your rights. I go to the same obgyn as friends too and with their knowledge have said something to the obgyn too.

Re: WWYD? Kind of freaking out, and I'm not a freaking out kind of person...

LB,

I feel the same exact way. I was really set on having a repeat C this time because my first went so well, but then when I read Kristin's birth story my stomach dropped and I cried thinking of what she must have gone through those days in the hospital (many, many Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to you Kristin).

If she is ok with you mentioning her name, I would absolutely, definitely address my concerns with your OB.

and 3 in one day?????Chat Icon Chat Icon how in the world can that happen.

I understand accidents can happen, but 3 in one day, WOW, just WOW!!!

I agree that you should ask that only the attending work on you. Hopefully that is an option that will put your mind to rest a little. I don't know what your rights are in insisting this, but try to find out.

My practice has 2 OB's and I know it is MY dr. that will do the surgery.

But, I'm really, really, nervous at the thought of another C now.

Stony Brook... I want to add that the nurses are amazing and most of the residents are too. It just so happens this one "Chief" of resident was having a VERY bad day.

After reading her birth story, there is NO WAY I'd use that practice. IMO the doctor who originally told her she had fluid leaking was lying about it. She said that one doctor was anti-VBAC the whole time, right? All you need is to see that ONE doctor and all of a sudden you "need" another c-section, kwim?

Add to the fact that there were complications with the c-section, and that is more than enough reasons to never use them.

I know you're very far along but I think you'd still have time to switch.

I agree with everyone that you should voice your concerns but as Kristin said...it's the residents that you would have the most concern with if you are looking at her situation.

I know when I delivered Lucas the doctor had to step out (10 babies born on the ward that night all within minutes of each other) and the resident continued to have me push...and I tore...the doctor was upset but she felt it wasn't heading that way but it was what it was. I remember the look on the doctor's face when she came back...I realized what was happening when she nudged the resident out of the way.

I would talk to them and if you don't feel satisfied after talking to them, I would look into changing practices.

Re: WWYD? Kind of freaking out, and I'm not a freaking out kind of person...

Thank you for your input everyone. Chat Icon

FTR I will not be switching practices. Like Kristin said, it was the Chief of residents that was at fault, not any of our OBs. (Although I will be avoiding Dr. K at all costs Chat Icon because I don't think what she did is fair to Kristin)

I do want to address it with my OB, which I'll do at my 38 week visit (I won't be seeing an actual OB until then). I am sure they will know what I mean without me having to bring up Kristin's name... while I do appreciate you giving me the okay K Chat Icon I don't want to do that unless I have to, out of respect for your privacy.

I'll update once I have spoke with the OB.

LB you are going to have a nice, beautiful VBAC, what happened to me is really really rare and Im sure after what happened last week to the 3 of us, they are being VERY cautious now. Dr. S was great and so was Dr. D it really was just that resident who just didn't do what she needed to do for me afterwards.

Glad to hear you're goign to talk to them, best to voice your concerns. I'm sure as Kristin said, they're now going to be even more cautious and prepared, but it will make you feel better to discuss it with them.

ITA with Kate! You really are awesome Kristin! There is a reason why we adore you! Chat Icon You've been through hell and you are still such a great and helpful friend! Chat Icon

LB-Kristin is right-I would insist not to see Dr. K because I don't like what I heard, but it clearly was the negligence of the on call resident. That person is not an employee of your OB, so theoretically, it is Stony Brook who would be liable. I would imagine that at least one of the other women saw a doctor from another practice-KWIM?

You two are too muchChat Icon I just dont want LB to worry about this, its not going to happen to her. They are not going to let that happen again. I mean, God forbid they do cut her, I guarantee she will be taken care of properly.

To answer your question, the other two women (one of them needed 24 transfusions Chat Icon ) were both patients at different offices we just all happen to have had the same Resident. I do not hold my doctors responsible because the Chief of Residents was left in charge of me after my surgery. But ITA, stay away from Dr. K, I just feel things will go a lot smoother for you if you do. You are well informed about the VBAC and risks etc, you do not need her scare tactics and you do not need to second guess yourself this far into your pregnancy.
