Working Mom Guilt and EI Therapy

DS has eating issues. He doesn't like certain textures so will throw up or won't eat it.
His Ped recommended a great Eating Therapist, but she's out of network and pricey. I took a half day at work and took him in. She was good and had some tips to work with him on. Now he just turned 2 and still eating baby food veggies and other mushed up stuff. He'll eat cookies, crackers, etc, but not chicken or pastas. The older he gets the harder it is to work with him on things. He just throw the food on the floor he refuses to eat.
Anyway, I am pregnant and can't really take any days off b/c I'm saving them for when I'm on leave. I haven't been to the therapist since March and there's no progress with DS.
I feel guilty that I should be taking him to see an EI Therapist for his eatin and maybe even evaluated for his speech. He has a lot of words, but still not really saying any sentences and only a couple of 2 word sentences.
Sorry so long, but I feel like being pregnant and working I'm putting off DS's issues. Maybe when I'm on leave I can take him to get evaluated. I just feel guilty that I should be working with him on more things. He eats great with spoon so I give him his mashed up stuff in a bowl or his cereal and he goes to town

Hi!

Can you find a therapist in your area that comes to your home? That's what we arranged, we've chatting before about this, my daughter had very similiar issues to your DS but with aggressive EI (2-3 times a week) she is now an amazing eater. It takes the right therapist to really teach what is best for the daycare, at home, etc. We have mini "therapy" sessions ourselves with our DD several times a week also.

FM anytime!!!

Thanks ladies!
I'll have to look into our town. I new more about it on LI. The Eating Therapist was saw was about 25 minutes away and they don't come to our place. Plus, it's out of network so it's sooo pricey. FIrst session was $350 and then after that she says it's $150! I can't afford all that and who knows how long she'd want to see him.

I'll have to ask the Ped for more suggestions in the area and to see if he qualifies.

DS gets speech through EI (on LI), all free. Can you see if he qualifies? Then you wouldn't have to worry about cost, and our lady will even come on weekends for sessions.

He wouldn't qualify for speech hereon LI if he has lots of words.

Google early intervention and your county and you will get a phone number. They will tell you about the process and schedule an evaluation with you and your son. If there is enough of a delay you will be able to get therapy for free. The therapist comes to you.

Good Luck

I would call your county EI and see what kinds of therapists they have that could help and can come to your daycare.

Maybe an OT could even help.Chat Icon

That's great to hear she's progressing! I'm so jelous! So tired of having to bring baby food when we're out. Chat Icon We try giving him everything and he's getting worse b/c he's more aware.
Not sure if he'll qualify for speech b/c he has a lot of words, but he still does a lot of babbling too.
I called an 800 # that was given and left a message. Hopefully it'll work out
thanks again Chat Icon

I think on LI you needed like fewer than 10 words at 2 to qualify (and not follow direction/identify).

Ok, then he wouldn't qualify for speech. He does say a lot of words. Although his Ped said he's a boy b/c I tell him these girls his age talk circles around him. LOL!
My sister is also a speech therapist and said he may not qualify for speech b/c every time she sees him he says more. She doesn't know too much about eating. Doesn't hurt to get him checked out

thanks all!!

Re: Working Mom Guilt and EI Therapy

He could qualify for feeding therapy through EI. That would be either a speech therapist or OT with extra training in feeding therapy. They need to determine if there is a motor based problem or sensory problem or combo of both.

You're in NJ right? A friend of mine at work's son sees an eating therapist (he has severe issues) and it's in the Princeton area. Is that close - do you want the name?

Yeah, in NJ. Princeton isn't too far. Maybe 40 minutes. Thanks for the info. I'm just going to wait on the county to call me back to get evaluated. We did meet with an eating therapist that was great, but b/c she was out of network it was expensive. THe Princeton person may be the same thing.
