Windows scam phone call... kinda s/o to being rude customer service

I can't believe this happened yesterday, but it did. I think I grew a set after publicly saying I don't have the balls to confront someone face-to-face.
Ok, it was over the phone, but it was good. And it felt good.

A call comes in from "Out of Area 1019" on my caller ID. Normally, I'd never answer but I have been making a million calls for mom to settle dad's estate so I did.

Caller: (in a thick foreign accent from a very LOUD call center) "Ma'm I am calling from Microsoft Windows because your Windows operating system has been infected."

Me: (SNARKY as all hell) "Oh, who are you calling for?"

Caller: "I am calling because your computer operating system is infected."

Me: (completely sarcastic) "Oh my God, wow. It's amazing that you called since I am on a national do not call list. How did you get my number?"

Caller: "What?"

Me: "How did you get my number? I am on a national do not call list."

Caller: "I got your number from Windows. Your computer is infected with a virus."

Me: "Wow, don't you realize that everyone's on to your scam, you IDIOT? I don't even have a windows computer, and you didn't even know my name. Hello?"

Re: Windows scam phone call... kinda s/o to being rude customer service

They called me a few weeks ago as well. I let him talk (80%) i couldnt even understand. Once he got to the part about me doing whatever it was he wanted me to do on my computer i asked him if he thought I was an f@&ing idiot that I would just answer a random call and let someone have access to my computer and how I couldnt even understand anything he was saying. He just started stuttering and i hung up

My mom fell for this last month. Chat Icon she said she got a call from Windows Help that her computer had been hacked and he needed to remote in to find the problem. Of course my mom calls me frantic from her cell phone while she has this guy on her landline!!!
She promises me she didn't give him any information and when I tell her to hang up on him she says he is now writing to her through the computer!!!!!!

DIDNT GIVE HIM ANY INFO MY A$$!!!!

She had to disconnect her computer from the wall and have someone come in to do a professional factory reset and virus scan.

Then she tells me she thought it was legit because they had a bad storm the previous night and thought that might have caused the hacking.

STORMS DONT CAUSE HACKERS TO STEAL YOUR INFORMATION!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Windows scam phone call... kinda s/o to being rude customer service

DH and I play with the callers instead of getting upset.
DH go the call that he won $7000 and he had to get pen and paper to take down some info and call him back (that is the scam. You call back and get charged hundreds of $ on your phone bill) DH started shrieking in excitement and told the guy to hold on, he had to go clean himselfas he just $hit his pants in excitement. Puts the phone down, comes back a few minutes later and THE GUY IS STILL ON THE PHONE. He just kept insisting that my husband call him back. DH tells the guy he will call back and hangs up.

We've had people call from "Con Ed" about our bill (don't have one) how we could save money yadda yadda. They had my name and address, phone number. We played with them for while. DH kept telling the caller she sounded pretty on the phone, what color is her hair. He told her his name is Henry and that I would be home in an hour. One hour later this chick calls back and starts to tell me about the convo with DH. I tell her that "Henry" is my son and only 10 years old. Got her flustered then she went back into her script.
After about the 5th call I finally flipped and told the caller that this call was being recorded and traced by the FBI because they were too stupid to understand that I do not have a ConEd bill. Have not gotten another call from them.

Windows scam phone call... kinda s/o to being rude customer service

DH got this call the other day and being in IT knew exactly what was going on so he pretended to go along with it to the end, then told them to eff off. They used a 516 number.

Re: Windows scam phone call... kinda s/o to being rude customer service

ugh my mom just fell for this scam last week. She went to the website the guy "from microsoft" told her to go to, put in her credit card number for the "free trial" (they charged over $700 the same day) and then gave him remote access. She finally called me when he started downloading all sorts of different programs and it made her nervous. Luckily it wasn't too hard to fix... we called the bank to reverse the charges, closed the card, and wiped the computer. I guess I'll have to keep her up-to-date on all the new scams as they come out... it's amazing to me she had never heard of this scam before Chat Icon

Re: Windows scam phone call... kinda s/o to being rude customer service

When they call me - I have SO much fun with them if I have the time.

First, when they ask me if I am near my computer, I say yes, but it is not on. I pretend that I am so computer illiterate I cannot figure out where the on button is, and I make them walk me through that process.

Then, together, we wait for the computer to boot up. Since I have SO many viruses, it takes about 5-10 minutes for it to boot up. AND - they think they have a real sucker on the line, so... they wait. And wait and wait and wait. (Usually I am walking my dog, or doing dishes, or something where I have some time to have fun). They will ask - is it on yet? And I'm like - nope - it's still coming on Chat Icon

And then.... The pop ups from my virus come up. I will ask them if the virus is related to (and then I will graphically explain a porn pop up. I'm talking man on man action, man on horse action, etc.... explicitly). They will ask me why I have that on my computer - and I will remind them of the virus they are about to help me fix - and this must be related. Sometimes I lose them here. If I do not, we move on to phase 2.

Here is where it gets fun... because - my computer is SO messed up, it keeps crashing. So - the website they have me go on (after I mess it up a few times by saying out loud a different address) was ALMOST completely typed out - and then... oh MAN - crashed.

As we know... my computer takes a VERRRRYYYY long time to boot up again. And then I have to remind them of all the pop ups I need to click out of.

My computer, damn thing - can crash several times depending on the time I have and how patient they are. Most are extremely patient.

And then - instead of going on to the website, now that I got it right - I accidentally googled it - and then I am reading out loud to them about their scam. OR - in the middle of my act, I say "You know I'm fcking with you... right?" And then they get SO pisssed, ut that usualy stops the calls for months after I do that a few times Chat Icon

I've done that with my friends or DH watching and they cannot believe the ride I take them on. I'm thinking if I waste a significant amount of their time, that time is taken away from snowing a legitimately naive individual.

Oh I have fun with the winning money one too - for having a perfect tax record or something... you are awarded a grant. I also shriek very loudly in their ears with excitement, make them hold on as I tell my whole family, and then go back on and say all the medical treatments I can FINALLY get to save my life because of this money coming in. I get very religious on the line for that one. But - they have less patience than the microsoft guys.

My husband received a call a few months ago from someone claiming he had a warrant out for his arrest in Nevada (where he has never been). At first he was freaking out, but after I googled the number and confirmed that it was a scam, he just started messing with the woman. The scammers are getting creative.

Got this call too about 2 months ago. Luckily I knew it was a scam to due posts in LIF (thankfully). I asked how they got my number because I am on the do not call list. The lady kept repeating about the Microsoft virus and I said that's great but I know this is a scam did you really think I would give you my info. I asked for her name and company so I can report her and she hung up.

I know what you mean, my mom didn't even use email till after my dad passed away. My brother helped her choose an iPad and she happened to get a similar call. Luckily she laughed in his face because he kept insisting there was something wrong with the computer even though she told him she no longer had a computer. Chat Icon

That's amazing! So funny. Thanks for posting about this again, and especially for the seniors in our lives. It reminds me I should warn my parents about this.

I did warn my mom about this and MIL, too. Sometimes they get so frantic over things they think they should be doing... it's just the nature of them at their age. Although they aren't elderly, I can understand when they say "oh I didn't want to bother you, you're busy". I told them both that I'm not too busy to prevent a BIG headache of paperwork later...

exactly.
FIL is under orders to NEVER give out any personal information to anyone.
He is not to tell callers
- that he is a senior citizen
- that he lives alone
- that his wife is dead
- his social security number
- his bank info
- anything remotely personal about himself

He is to tell callers that I will call back and to take down their information.

He caused me a lot of grief in the past right after his wife died and I threatened him with joining her quickly if he ever did that again.
