Wife Swap (Parenting Related)
I enjoy this show as a viewer, but as I'm watching it today (working from home) I can't help but think how confusing this must be for the kids involved!
Their parents ethics and beliefs are trashed right in front of them. They see their fathers arguing with a stranger who is pretending to be their mommy for 2 weeks!
The moms talk to the kids away from the dads to make them question their family philosophy (granted its not theirs per se, but its the one they are being raised with until they create their own). They change things quite drastically for their stay, sometimes make them cry and tantrum, and its all being filmed....
Why would anyone want to be on this show? Especially those earthy-crunchy family types who keep pushing the importance of family and protecting their kids????

Yeah, but there is this family living off the grid, preaching the evils of money, etc - they don't even have electricity - let alone a TV - why are they doing this????

I don't think they get paid for Wife Swap, right? Isn't Trading Spouses the show that they do the money to each family?

We see 45 minutes of something that went on for days, its all edited to look more dramtic than it really was.
As for why they do it - money, chance to live somewhere else for a few days, everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame, etc

Maybe it's also to raise awareness of alternative lifestyle choices? My friend appeared on a documentary back in the 90's. She is one of the most private, low key people EVER.. but she agreed to be part of it because she felt it was good for people to see that there are happy, well adjusted families who don't live the typical suburban, meat eating dream.

I agree - horrible example for the children & I would never leave my kids for that long nor am I the type that would ever want to be on TV.
This is my theory. If you were a devout believer in whatever philosophy (save the whales, live off the grid, follow whatever religion) & believed that your kids are also devout believers, you may want to spread your word about whatever cause is important to you. I could see why those people would do it.
Other than that, fame seekers pure & simple.

To tell ya the truth...
I cant believe how so many of them live on that show. SO its not a bad idea for someone to come in and say "NO cereal does NOT belong in your bath tub" and "ILLLLLWWWW you have rats and roaches in your kitchen"...
I kid but seriously...how the heck do people live like this, really!

It also shows how much nicer and kinder dads are BC OMG could you imagine if the mother that comes in yells at our kids

Right and then they take the worst parts to make it look like the families live like that 24/7.

Of course I'm guilty of watching Super Nanny and judging the families

I am under the impression that they don't get paid also or not much. I think a lot of people like the attention though and might want to be on TV. Look at the balloon family and the lengths they went for some time in the spotlight.
Would I do this? No. Nor would they have us, I don't think we're interesting/odd enough. Our house is reasonably clean, but not pathologically so. We are not pirates, nor do we dress in medieval garb, bikers, etc. So it won't ever come to pass for us, but I wouldn't do it. I agree--it's disruptive and upsetting for the kids. Even if their parents are doing many things wrong, that is their world.

I have only watched this show once or twice but I know what you mean. I think some go on to prove that they are better parents and their lifstyle is superior.

But it all fits into the routine for the child. Its not some weird woman who is totally opposite from your mom saying something completely opposite from everything you have been told your whole life. With her missing from the picture for 2 weeks. With cameras.
