Why don't people pay attention to fire drills or real fires at work?
Our fire alarms went off yesterday and everyone ignored them. No announcements were made about there being a "drill so I grabbed my jacket/purse and left. Once I got outside I saw mobs of people and then the fire department showed up.
Turns out there was a FIRE on our floor!!!! I could not believe after all the drills..people just sat at their desks and had to literally be yelled at to leave. Is work THAT important???
Also some people didn't take their personal belongings but took their breakfast..

OMG! thank goodness you were smart enough to pay attention! work can't be THAT important that you ignore a fire alarm!!
i worry about that a lot, too. i work at a shcool, and we are required to have 2 fire drills a month, which is good. but i always worry if it will make a real fire less "important".
i remember when i was growing up, our smoke detectors would go off randomly if they got dust in them or whatever... and one night they started going off in the middle of the night. my sister and i stayed in bed and ignored them  luckily it wasn't a real fire, but i can't tell you how much my dad yelled at us for not getting up to see what was going on!

It's pretty scary how they prep you so often and people ignore it completely. I work on the 8th floor and although it wasn't a long way down, just the fact that there was the smell of smoke and the elevators had been taken out of service, was pretty scary. I'm sure based on yesterdays fire there will be more drills to come because it seems everyone ignored it and didn't know what to do. So much for assigning "fire wardens"

See in my company the fire alarm goes off every week due to mechanical problems so if/when there is a fire or problem everyone ignores it and laughs "not again"!

I don't think it's that work is so important but the fire alarms in my building are tested so frequently that no one pays attention anymore. We have been desensitized to them. So unless there's an announcement that there is a fire or we see/smell smoke, no one is really going to go anywhere.

Wow..that's crazy. In my job when the alamrs are going to be tested, announcements are made. Yesterday that wasn't the case, and when I saw security running up the stairs to our floor..I knew it wasn't a joke.
It's just sad that measures are taken to ensure our safety and no one heeds to them.
Had this been worse, it would have been pandemonium because we have over 1000 employees in this building. I can't even begin to tell you what it was like trying to get out of the building.

We have to pay attention to fire drills - they will come and find us if we don't.
The alarm hasn't gone off here ever (in the 9 years I've been here - the last fire was a week before I started) but, we have had fire alarm related announcements. Everyone definitely stops and listens.

Probably because there are so many fake drills. We have been having them once a week here and they tell us just stay inside.

well thats just crazy.
The FD mandates that they are done at a certain frequency in NYC. My DH is Fire Safety Director in his building and if there is a fire he needs to make sure the Fire Warden for each floor is helping everyone leave the building and knows the quickest way out.
He (or anyone else) should stay behind chasing after people who can't heed a fire alarm? I don't think so...
