Re: Who read the Devil Wears Prada??

the scary part for me was that although Miranda was an absolute uber b!tch-- the rest of the stress and putting the job ahead of everything was not that far off the mark for working in NYC... At least, it was close to my last job. I actually found it quite disturbing that something that is supposed to be fictional is more real-- depending on your industry.

I read it a while ago. You're take on it is interesting because I was wondering if it's really that way in the fashion industry. My work at times takes up most of my time but it's completely different if that makes any sense at all. Did you enjoy the book? I really want to see the movie when it comes out.

Re: Who read the Devil Wears Prada??

I really liked the book-- I read it really quickly. I lived in NYC right after I graduated college and just moved out less than a year ago, just to Hoboken-- but, it's always fun to read about NY when you know the references even to the bagel shops mentioned in the book.

I work in advertising-- and it can be just as ridiculous as fashion. Some of the egos you encounter are mammoth. And there is a lot of stupid idiotic tasks-- but, the thing I really identified with, was how seriously a lot of the stupid shite is taken and your time not really being your own for eating, bathroom breaks, etc., that is until you got home.

Man, I don't know how you do it. I'd probably crack with all the pressure. The movie will be fun for you though!

Re: Who read the Devil Wears Prada??

I think it is "fictional" but the author did work in fashion and I thought I read that the character that was the boss was supposed to based on Anna Wintour....

Loved the book - silly at times, but fun.
I couldn't imagine working in an atomosphere like that either!! I give credit to those who can.

seriously-- that's what made it so unbearable, the fact that Miranda was such a raging ******.

I would have quit a long time before Andrea quit-- especially with her month to month lease!! But, in all reality-- I don't know what I would have done at the end-- to make it through all that time-- and just wait one or two more days- to get hat job at the New Yorker-- I think I would have stayed. I mean-- all the suffering was for naught.

I really enjoyed the book and think anyone who worked in a corporate NYC office can relate on some level.

I think I am in the minority here -- I could not stand that book. There was not one character I could relate too and in the end Andrea was treating people around her in a similar way Miranda treated her. I did get a kick out of the security guard that would make her sing to get access to the building. Chat Icon

For me, it is one of those books I refer to as "brain candy". A quick easy read (I think I read it on the train) and I don't have to concentrate that hard on it. I enjoyed it for what it was, but it isn't one I highly recommend to other people. I didn't relate much to the charcaters either - I definitely would have quit waaaay before Andrea did, and no lunch? I never would have made it past the first week Chat Icon

I'm right there with you Christine - I hated the book. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it. That and the Nanny Diaries. Chat Icon

That was another one I didn't get the hoopla about. Although I did like that Nanny genuinely cared about the little boy, it was just way too much.

I read it and enjoyed it. Though I though that Andrea should have stuck it out for the last two days to get the better job. Basically the whole time was a waste.

I totally agree-- if you hadn't quit by that point-- I mean, what's two days.

I read it too. As unbelieveable as Miranda seemed, she was very similar to 2 bosses I've had. I thought it was a good read.

Re: Who read the Devil Wears Prada??

I read it. I agree the book wasn't the best, it was was just eh. The one thing that really irked me about this book was the ending. When she finally decides to quit and be the "hero" it's so anti-climatic it's pathetic. I'm sure in the movie it will be a long drawn our scene. But if I was that unhappy in my job and I knew this was my one change to really let her have it, it would have been better than that.....

I really liked it! I think if you can relate, you like it better...

I just finished (today) Lauren Weisberger's second book "Everyone worth knowing"... I thought that was really FUN too... "brain Candy" as someone said... but nice fast fun read.

DH & I saw the movie last night. Meryl Streep & Anne Hathaway were wonderful but we both agreed that the movie was just okay overall.

I thought the story was pretty interesting, but the writing wasn't good at all and seemed to get worse as the book went on.

Haven't seen the movie but I would like to.
