White Noise in Crib?

Anyone have a white noise machine in crib, or use a radio or something? After reading "Happiest Baby on the Block", we run the exhaust vent over the stove, and it definitely calms DD down. But we don't have anything in the bedroom yet, so she doesn't like to sleep in her bassinet. Anyone use anything?

We use a white noise machine.

I put it at medium volume next to the crib. I swear when I started doing that he started sleeping for longer stretches.

We have been using the fisher price aquarium, and we play the "waves" sound. He loves it.

We use the Dex (sp?) one.
Set it to "wind" mode.
It's on her dresser though, not attached to the crib.

Re: White Noise in Crib?

See, I'm totally into looking to get one, to help her sleep better. But my question is: will baby not be able to sleep, say, in the stroller, at grandma's house, etc. without it? Do they become dependant on it?

DS can sleep out of the house. If there is even the littlest amount of noise - talking, a TV radio..he will sleep. ETA: I also swaddle him to help him learn when it is time to sleep.

I believe the book says you can start to "wean" them at 4 months by turning it down a little every night until they don't need it anymore.

I have a small battery powered one that I use so I can bring it with me if need be.

Re: White Noise in Crib?

We use one every nap and night. Ours has 10 different sounds and one of them is white noise. DD can still sleep other places without it though. I mostly use it b/c we live on a street where lots of loud cars go by. The pumped up music drives me crazy!!!

DH downloaded white noise (from iTunes, I think). He put it on his iPod and we play it on continuous repeat through speakers in our bedroom.

We have the sleep sheep that someone gave us. I swear by this thing. My DD has been sleeping since 7 weeks old. It drowns out any background noise. I know you can order them online.

We use one too. Ours has a number of different sounds. But I keep it on the white noise.

This is what we did for almost a year and it worked fabulously!!! Now we use "summer night" because the birds outside were waking him up @ 5amChat Icon

We have a sound machine. We use it at every nap and at night, but he falls asleep in other locations without it. I set it either on waterfall or heartbeat.

We use a radio tuned in between stations, we always have. I got the idea from that book too.

Re: White Noise in Crib?

When he was young, we had a cd of white noise we used for him to fall asleep to - mostly heartbeat sounds or rain on the roof. When he got older and had sleep issues, we realized when we ran the humidifier - he slept better so we now use a white noise machine in his room and still use it at 2 (he naps without it - just at bedtime). works for us...we are afraid to stop using it...

This is why we never got either DC used to particular sounds. We try to keep things a little varied, so they are used to everything. We had a Beethoven/Bach/Strauss "player"/mobile for their cribs that we would use once in a while, but never all the time. You never know where you'll be at bedtime, and you want them to be able to sleep even if they don't have their noise machine. At least that's the theory we're going with.

Re: White Noise in Crib?

Is there any concern of a long term impact to a child's hearing by pumping in white noise, or background noise? Not sure if that's a problem?
