It depends how far you want to go into Maine. I absolutely love Oginquit and York. Both these towns are at the very beginning of Maine.

I totally agree. For us these 2 towns are our favorite hands down. Plus York has the Taffy Place, and the petting zoo, and some rides. And a great beach. LOVE IT!
As for Bar Harbor. I think York or Oqunquit are better for children. We didn't like it there at all. And it is a far drive.
